This is my first post and I need Help !. My new 6.4 350 Lariat should be in this week and have no confidence in the truck. It will be used to tow a 5th wheel and all I invision is blow tourch 5 feet from two 30# gas bottles. I don't think the reprogram is the fix. Botom line is do I accept the truck or reorder a V10?

Go ahead and get it! Because of sensational videos, that show a truck with an obvious mechanical breakage (and not related to the recall), and rumors, people are nervous about these trucks. If you use the proper fuel (wrong fuel can bring about excessive regen cycles) correct oil (the new spec calls for a low ash oil), you shouldn't have any problems.
I have 3300 miles on my 6.4 Ford PSD. I have towed a 5th wheel trailer weighing 10600 pounds for 2200 miles. My truck was a joy to drive with the trailer. Lots of power, comfort, noise free cab and a tow haul that won't quit. My 99 Ford PSD cannot hold a candle to the new truck. Today, i wouldn't hesitate to recommentd the new 6.4D. to anyone who is interested in a new truck. Some of the forum comments come from members who don't have a new truck so do not speak from experience of owning one.
The safety recall has been streached to the limit. Three trucks out of 9800 had a fuel leakage problem. The safety flash up will reduce the regeneration process to keep temperatures down. I think you have better chance of getting run over than the flame problem. Lastly I am a diesel man and would never be happy with a gasser in a SD.
There is no doubt ford did a great job on the truck, its well built and fit and finish is great, many here are posting the great towing power of the 450, the main difference is the gears. Many were using a 350 with 410 gears and going to the 488 gears in the 450 is the difference, gears make a big diff. when pulling. For me I would wait a year and let them get all the bugs worked out.
well i know your concern, i too had it when i went from my problem free 2001 7.3 to a 2006 6.0. but i went with the attitude of "well, ford hasnt screwed me yet", ive owned 4 ford trucks and they've all been great. so i went for it! and so far, 16,000 trouble free miles!
Get it! there freakin sweet. I want one real bad, but im probly gonna have to wait a year or two before I can get out of my 6.0. Ford put alot of testing into this motor, dont let one video of a broken truck discourage you.
I cancelled my order for the 08, smart? maybe. Chicken? yes...I have a perfectly good 99 7.3 and don't need a 50 thousand dollar headache at this point in my life. If the trucks prove to be bullet proof, and I hope they do, I'll buy one. Money is hard to come by and easy to part with, I only part with mine when I'm at least better than 50% sure I'm going to win.
Great website, great feedback. After reading many post Iam leaning toward the V10. It looks like the gas mileage will be close to same and by droping PSD i could move up to the King Ranch.
i just got my 08 SD and i love it. I have about 1,000 miles on it, and i do not have one complaint about it... those flame thrower trucks only came from certain plants and only a select amount of them went out before they caught it.... it happened to the first x amount of trucks they started building (that was atleast what the service tech at the dealership told me.) I think he said the kentucky plant was one of the plants those trucks were coming from.... Regaurdless what anyone else says ford did a real good job with these new trucks (other then all the headaches with the emmission stuff but from what i hear alot of the aftermarket companies are finding good and reliable ways around the emissions.) If i were you i would stick with this truck and drop the v10, just my opinion though... im sure people have other feelings towards that. good luck
You should try and test drive a V10 in your config first.........You dont want to go blind into purchasing any vehicle. Both motors are great but that Diesel has gobbs of pulling power.
I am not sure what you are going to be towing, but even though the V-10 has great power and is a great motor (I have 2 of them and love them), if you are towing something heavy on the highway the V-10 will be revved up 4500-5000 rpm, will not hurt the motor but it is alot noisier than the 6.4. Right now after +/-2500 miles on the 6.4 I am getting 2 mpg better than I do pulling the same weight with the V-10. I expect that will get a little better. Anyways the V-10 is a great motor and might work for you, but don't make your decision based upon a couple of minor problems that have been resolved and some people on this forum talking out their A$#.
Kimminau2: Thanks for the info. I'm towing a 26.5 HitchHiker II weighing around 10,000 lbs. Pin weight is about 1400 lbs. Specs I have read puts the 350 V10 well within limits.
