New to the site and just bought my first diesel to pull my 26' Grady. It's a 1993 F-350, 185,000, 5-speed with the non turbo IDI. I drove it back 700 miles home from where I purcahsed it with no problem. Went to start it up this morning and it ran real rough, no smoke just rough. It feels like a miss, probly a glow plug. I believe if it was anything else I would have noticed it on the ride home. I don't have time to mess with it today but figured I'd post this and maybe get a head start on it. Thanks
Any "loud woof woof" from under the air cleaner (removed) or the tailpipe chuffing at idle..... Did you put any fuel additives in the fuel tanks yet, how about the fuel filter, there is a water drain on the base...... any warning lights on the dash.
No water in fuel filter. The sound is similar to your unique description and I have not added any fuel additives. The truck ran fine for 700 miles with only 1 fill up and it started right up after that. It sat overnight last night and then this morning the problem I posted.
No, I filled both tanks myself and ran about 350 miles on both of them yesterday. It ran perfect. Have about 1/4 left in the front tank. I recieved your written schematic and explination of the ignition w/plugs. THANKS

What is a chuffing sound, mine has a funny tailpipe noise put runs fine driving.
Would an additive be the problem even though it ran fine for 700 miles yesterday? I just plugged it in to warm up and going to see if it runs normal in a little while. Thanks
Does it run rough after getting warmed up some? IF no then glow plugs might need to be looked at, could have one or more not working properly.
A friend of mine had your problem and used a fuel additive with premium fuel and it went away after a good run down the freeway. But he went back to #2 and it ran rough and smoked.
If the tailpipe is chuffing then suspect an exhuast valve is not closing right. Need to do a compression test ........ or it could be a weak injector. Just have to pin it down.
Plugged it in and let it warm up for 2 hours. It ran better but still rough, similar to a spark plug out in a gas engine. There is a chutter in the tail pipe. There is also a hiss right after I cut it off, similar to a vaccum leak except I could not find one. Will do a compression test tomorrow just need to get a compression gauge for a diesel, only have one for gas. It could possibly be a valve, just hopping its not. Compression test will tell. Post results tomorrow. Any more input would help out alot. Thanks
i see you mentioned that you didnt run any additives through it. i would try getting you another fuel filter and filling it up with diesel kleen, put it back on the filter housing and start it up. its going to smoke some but its alright, let it run till it clears the additive out and see if that helps.
does the hiss sound like it might be from the exaust because i have seen where mufflers have came apart internaly they will run ok untill hit a bump or just start up and parcialy or totaly block off the exaust causing rough running and lack of power
OK, Couldn't find a compression tester for a diesel locally. Rigged one up from a gas tester and a R134 high side guage. I just need to get an adapter to fit the plug hole. I also changed the fuel filter and filled the new filter with diesel kleen. Ran alot better and when it got warm it ran almost normal. It still has what I can only describe as a slight miss feeling in the engine when at temperature. It's barely noticeble when driving. The noise that I said sounds like a vaccum leak when it is cut off sound more like a rasping hiss. I know for sure it is not vaccum or exhaust. When I get the adapter for the compression test I will know if it is a badexhaust valve/spring. Anyone who has any more ideas please share. THANKS
