5w 40 synthetic Shell Rotella

5w40 is usually used in diesel engines, with guys who normally use a 15w40 oil. Speaking of Shell Rotella T, their 5w40 oil is an excellent oil for diesel owners looking for a better winter oil in frigid temps, plus a slight increase in diesel fuel mileage, as compared to a regular 15w40 oil.
Instead of a 5w40, why not use the Shell Rotella t 10w30 oil? It has the diesel additives you're looking for, plus I feel it's a better, overall oil, if you're using it in a gasoline engine. Just my opinion.
Wal-Mart has this oil (RotellaT 10w30) both in quart containers, and gallon jugs.

5W-40 is a very popular synthetic grade in Europe. As Ed mentioned, it is also used as a diesel engine grade here. Lately, this oil has become popular with motorcycle riders because of the low price compared with special motorcycle oils. The same ZDDP that protects flat-tappet cams also protects transmission gears. Not being "Engergy Conserving" means that wet clutches wont slip.
Ed,
I cant find 10W-30 "fleet" oils anywhere in So. Cal., Chinamart, AZ, PB, Kragen, etc. For summer, straight 30 Delo and Rotella T are still commonly available. The straight 30 Delo 400 has a VI almost of a 10W-30, much better than most straight 30s.

JIM - ECO, what you might want to do is ask the manager at your Wal-Mart to start stocking the Shell Rotella T 10w30. It is obviously on Wal-Marts order inventory, so it can be ordered. It's not like it's AMSOIL, Royal Purple or Red Line oils, where they've never been ordered in the first place, by Wal-Mart.
What is probably occurring is your local stores are simply re-ordering what they've carried in the past. They might not even know this oil is available. Even here, in the Sacramento, CA area, it's only been on the shelf, maybe two months now, but I have seen it, 10w30 Shell Rotella-T 10w30 oil, with diesel oil certification on the quarts or 5 gallon jugs.
They are also stocking a lot of Chevron Supreme oil, Delo 400 in 4 quart gallon jugs (15w40) and TropArtic Oils, which I like.
I have not been to my local Kragen's Auto parts, in 4-5 months, I'll have to stop in ASAP and see what is up there.

I actually use the synthetic Rotella 5w40 in everything I have except my 6.9L diesel, in it I only use Rotella 15w40 because it has to be changed more often and costs quite a bit less. I have a 3.4L chevy and a 2.0L saab engine neither use any oil between changes and they both get the 5w40. I would run the 5w40 in the 6.9L too, but it seems kind of a waste since it gets dumped regularly.

The new CI-4, such as Delo 400 LE still have a good dose of ZDDP compared to PCMO's. A sigificant difference is in the lower TBN, resulting in lower sulfated ash. Cats are sensitive to sulfur, as well as lead and phosphorus. Due to the introduction of Ultra Low Sulfur diesel fuel, the TBN does not have to be as high as in the past. This actually makes fleet oils even better for gasoline engines than before.

Here's something, I spoke to Shell Tech line prior to doing this. On their recommendation the 0W-40 full syn. is the only oil that meets the requirements of the Triton gassers.
I wanted something I could run in them and our 7.3, Passat t-d and tractors.
It has been 3 years now and no issues. I don't know why the 5w-40 doesn't spec out for the tritons..
cheers
