Need help - has anybody had the problem where the display on the radio goes blank? ('03 F250 SD, AM/FM/CASS/CD). Is this a fix that can be done at home? I am pretty handy with a soldering iron.
Doesnt sound like an at home fixer up. The display and the rest of the functions are all on the same harness so if one feature goes bad and not the rest its typically the radio.
That is what I thought too, but there is a guy on ebay selling instruction on how to fix this problem for about $20. I don't have a problem spending the money, just wanted to see if anybody else had seen this problem or fix, and if it was worth it.
I didn't. The truck was new to me, from a dealer, and they fixed it for free. What I have read, though, is that there was a quality problem for a while not only with Ford, but a number of manufacturers where the soldering withing the radio was sub par, and as the radio warmed up, contacts would open and the display would stop working. None the less, my radio is back in the truck and working.
This is a known problem on earlier models. I have the problem on my wife's 98 explorer. Try f-150 online.com Search for a thread about blank display.
It's a solder joint that's failed.
You may find a radio on ebay for cheaper than you'll pay for repair of your current one. If you choose to go that route you should make sure the radio will fit your truck. They may look the same but the mounting maybe different
