300 vs 302
I have a 302 in my f150, and it has been a good motor, but I may some day decide to build up a 300 instead.
I think thee problem with the 302 is it has such a short stroke (4x3) that it is best used at higher rpms, but the stock cam and heads are best tuned for low end torque. The result is an engine that does not have the high rpm max Hp that it could, and not paticularly good torque or fuel economy either.
The 300 on the other hand is almost like a tractor motor. Bore to stroke (4x3.98) is nearly square and it too does not have a very free flowing head, but at least all the parts of the engine are pushing for a common goal--low end torque. The lower rpm torque also produces diesel like performace in terms of fuel economy, life expectancy, and low speed pulling torque, many call it the bset engine that ford ever made.
