Is anybody here using a satellite dish for internet service? The reason i ask is the place i'm moving to in SC does'nt have cable so i have to get direct tv or similar however the internet side concernes me. How secure is the internet side of it?
From what I know, the initial investment is on the pricey side as the equip is about $400. I believe the co. is Directway or something like that. The upload side is a little on the slow side as well.

After reading the other posts. . . have you considered an 'air card' and one of the wireless providers, such as Verizon or Sprint/Nextel?
Verizon has the air card that inserts into a PC card slot on a laptop and I think one that uses a slot on a desktop pc.
The monthly fee is pricey ($59.99/mo) but, it is broadband speed.
sattalite internet is no easier to hack than cable it is all controlled buy your internet settings on your pc.my sister uses yourlink at her farm far cheaper than the phone company 3 year contract and you get the equipment free ($400) she pays $49.99 per month but this is canadian prices yourlink is also in the states look them up.
I've gotten ads that quoted $50+ per month. Also, it has some drawbacks.
-it's somewhat slower
- there's a noticeable delay when you do a mouse click
( These are things I found out when I checked it out)
However, all may not be lost. I live in a near urban 'black hole' -- I'm not that far out of town, but I can't get a pizza delivered much less cable.
Just recently, however, I got satellite TV and hi speed internet. The internet is interesting. They have a Wireless Lan access point a couple of miles from me, and they set me up with a wireless modem that connects to my network port. The modem is hooked up to my phone line, and I can connect a computer anywhere I have a phone jack. I do have to have a filter between the line and my phone.
I'm hoping that the LAN is encrypted -- I'll be checking on that soon. Right now, I'm enjoying it too much. I just recently retired, and it's been painful living with just a modem.
Internet is Internet. Your security is based on your firewall on your PC. If you have a good antivirus/firewall program, you will be fine.
I have my home setup with the wireless stuff and it's nice because I can take my laptop anywhere in the house, I have an old computer in my garage and can access the internet using a wireless USB adapter and so on. You have to be careful though, because If your wireless system is not encrypted or secure, than someone else can use your wireless network to access the internet, like your neighbors. If you have shared files, than those persons can look into your files. sorry, that was a bit off topic, but as far as using a satellite service for internet, you shouldn't have problem.
I close on the place on the 13th of April so i'm doing alll my reasearch now. Ford2go i'm beginning to think this place is a country black hole everyone around here has cable but this property and my neighbor. I know the security settings help on the computer but on the news not too long back they had a 14 year old kid walking around a neighborhood with the reporter looking at the files of wireless customers with a homemade antenna and a laptop. Kinda makes ya wonder.
I've been using Hughes satellite (prev. Direcway) since we moved up here over 2 years ago. I haven't had any problems with security issues but it is pricey. $63.99 per month and the equipment is expensive. Its no where near as fast as DSL but much faster than dial-up.
The support isn't bad once you get passed to the Ft. Laud office where they speak english.
I have directv and when I asked about internet service last year I was told $600 up front and like $70 per month. They told me if we play online games or use ebay that there is a lag and it would not be good for that so we stuck with cable at $60 per month but we are considering dsl now.
