I have a 2000 dually crew cab automatic with a 3.73 gears and I average 14.7 empty at 70-80 mph and 12.1 loaded. My truck is stock other than a muffler delete. I had to order the 6637 from Napa so I am waiting to see if this helps me any.
Okay...changed the fuel filter today and sure enough added a mile per gallon, so I'm getting 13mpg now at 65mph. It was pretty dirty. I'm cleaning out the fuel system with biodiesel so I expected to see some gunk in there.
But, I'm a little miffed that I'm still not getting the kind of mileage most of the rest of you are getting. It runs so beautifully that it really bugs me that I'm not doing better. Is there anything else I can do for a boost? I've got fresh oil & filter, new fuel filter, and new 6637 air cleaner mod. Am I going to have to do the chip thing to get those 2-3 more mpg??
Biodiesel does have a little less energy content than dino D, but I haven't noticed any difference in get up and go. It could account for 1 mpg less than using dino, which I can easily live with, but I'm still thinking there is something I may be able to do to get a couple more mpgs. Suggestions?? You all drive faster than I do too.
An 80 econo burn from DP-tuner will probably net maybe 1-2 mpg if you continue to drive conservatively (good luck!).
Also, don't go by what the overhead says. You can't change the fuel filter and then go drive and see what the mpg is... gotta drive a tank or two and hand calculate and see how you're doing then.
I have a srw and I usually get 14-16 depending on how I drive and how much interstate. The only way I can get into the upper teens is if I keep it under 60.
I have a 2000 F-350 dually 7.3 w/6 speed I normally get 15.5 to 16 empty and about 13 to 13.5 pulling cattle trailer I keep the fuel and air filters clean, always thought that was the secret on a stock truck. the only thing on my that is not stock is the muffler delete.
2002 CC 4x4 Dually 3.73 auto. Best is 16.3 unloaded. I average 10-12 loaded with a 4000lb camper and 3500lb boat. It looks like I'm in there with most of you.
I got 15.5 on my last tank which I went about 600 miles on before stopping to fill up. It included a good amount of highway driving, some mountain climbing (went to Tahoe and back), and a bunch of romping around making smoke as much as I could out on some back roads.
Just ran another tank driving down to Tulare and back - mostly highway, going 75-80 for a few parts to keep up with a few folks on the way down, but driving conservatively (72 or less) on the way back, with some heavy smoking a few times while I was down south. Managed 16 even (well, 15.98 ) mpg. I again put in a bit more than I normally would, as I trickled it in until it was pure clear fuel all the way up to the cap. I should just fill up that way every time so I know my calculations will be dead on every time, but sometimes I'm too lazy to trickle for that long.
Well...darn it!! Ya see...that's what makes me think I just may have to get a chip in mine. Everyone is driving 10+mph faster than I am, and mostly driving chipped CC automatics and they're all getting 2-3 more miles per gallon than me. Mines a 6-speed manual extended cab, so I should be getting better mileagle than most of you. On a full tank, we're looking at additional miles of around 114 or so. THAT CAN ADD UP FAST!!! Now I'm going to have to pencil out the cost of adding gauges and a chip is going to be and see how long it will take me to make up the cost in fuel savings.
You can just get a tune burned onto your PCM by dp-tuner, such as the 80-econo program that I drive in most of the time, for about $75 - and you only really need an EGT gauge (boost is handy but not absolutely necessary). And honestly, the EGT gauge isn't really necessary if you're not towing, exhaust upgrade (such as getting rid of the restrictive stock muffler). If you tow at all, be sure you have an EGT gauge.
dp-tune $75
egt gauge setup, under $125?
muffler delete $60 or less
If you really want to go cheap, the tune and muffler delete will set you back for about $135.
