zf-5=manual tranny, no torque converter. if that was a retorical question, my bad not trying to be captain obvious. there is good info on the principles of operation for torque converters on howstuffworks.com

My 98 ford windstar transmission went I think. It showed no signs of trouble, no slippage or nothing, it was fine and all of a sudden while driving it just went out. I only had the van for 12 days. I checked the fluid and it was halfway up the stick. Drained the fluid, replaced gasket and filter, refilled. Still will not go. You can hear the linkage shifting.

It sounds like your tranny is toast. Sorry to give bad news. You can take/tow it to a tranny shop and have the tranny scanned. Maybe it can be saved.

Cottman sucks ***** . They screwed a guy that comes in the shop and cannot figure out his problem .Truck still does not drive right.
