i just picked up a 93 bonco 302. when i drive it it seems to wander from side to side. i have to keep compensating for it with the steering wheel. has anyone else experienced this? whats the fix? steering box maybe?
Could only be one thing! but... It's probably a combination of things. Twin I-beams love to take out the tie rod ends. Check those first. Lay under the front axle, and have your girlfriend or a buddy wiggle the steering wheel gently side to side, 45 deg usually does it. Look for any slack/play at both outer ends, as well as where the rods join in the middle, and at the steering box. Past that point, it's a toss up...Check the wheel bearings - If you just bought it, these probably need attention anyway. Then look to worn or frozen ball joints; There hard to detect, not like a passenger car, so you may use a good front end man. Also, I recently replaced the U-joint in the steering column. Made a big difference in mine. Then, once you've exahsted all the other possabilities, have a friend in the know fill you in on steering box adjustment, or read notes on this subject further down the listings! By the way, how many miles are on it??? Have fun, Bronco Billy!!!
Do what Bronco Billy says and if it still wonders, you may need to replace the radius arm bushings.
When I first got my Bronco, it also had problems with wondering. One of my outer tie rod end was shot so I placed it. I also ended up replacing the inner tie rod because the grease boot and nipple was missing and it was bone dry. Those did help with the wondering problem, but the biggest difference was made by replacing the radius arm bushings.
