I'm curious as to why Ford switched to the 3 Valve setup on the 2005 models and later? I understand that the 3 valve setup produces only very slight gains in power.
Mostly it was a political move. The 3V uses and is tuned to use regular unleaded fuel. The 4V is designed and tuned to use premium fuel, and that was a turnoff to the typical buyer in the market for a large "gas-guzzling" vehicle. It was bad enough to use alot of fuel, but to add the extra costs of premium fuel to the equation, and you scare buyers away. The 4V will make more power/tq than a 3V,but the OE tune has the 4V fairly neutered for making power where the 3V has variable cam timing to help make power.
JL - do you run 93 oct w/ your custom tuner, or can you program a lower octane setting?
Yes,I run premium fuel with my Navigator-it requires premium fuel from the factory.Yes,you could manipulate the borderline knock spark table to run 87 octane, but the savings of $7.00 tank(if it was BONE dry) is offset from the improved economy and power or running 93 octane vs 87 octane.

The 05 3 valve Navi is tuned from the factory to run on 91 or better octane. The manual discurages from using regular gas. But what is the differance between the navi setup and expy of the same year? I watch the factory spit them out of the same assembly line. The code on my 05 navi is CDW5.

There's no physical difference in the powerplants,it's all in the tuning. I see that your particular PCM calibration allows spark advance based on the knock sensor input and has 3-4 degrees more ignition spark advance than a regular fuel calibration does.

Does it look like Ford got as much power out of this program as possible? Or should i be looking at the PRP to try and pinch a few more ponies out of it. Right now i am not to happy with the shifting. A little too soft and not enough kick down for my taste.

Manufacturers always have to compromise in every calibration-even ones such as the almighty GT. You've got to please CARB, old folks that don't like harsh shifts, and people who are too cheap to use a quality fuel. Plus, you've gotta deal with keeping everything in tolerance for the warranty period.
So yes,I do believe that there are gains to be had-especially in the driveability and transmission functions.
