"Wiring fault on trailer" message

Every time I touch the brakes I now get a very annoying beep and an error message that says "wiring fault on trailer." I don't have a trailer hooked up so not for sure what's going on. The error message on the console I can live with but that loud beeping is driving me crazy.

If you hit the brake and keep the pedal depressed, then you only get the initial beep and then it goes away. The problem for me is I live north of Dallas so if I'm in traffic then I'm constantly hitting the brakes. I called my dealer today so I'll wait to hear what they have to say.

Anyone else have this problem yet?

Nope sorry.........sounds kind-a-like a "short" ? Did it "Just" start happening or did you do something and then it began?

I had similiar message on my 06 and they replaced the TBC, trailer brake controller; they reset my engine hour meter during the process and say they can not restore it back.

So if you take it in you might remind them to not screw up your engine hour meter.....

Check for a broken or shorted wire on your trailer brakes. The problem is seldom in the truck side.

The OP stated that he didn't have a trailer hooked up.

What ever came of this?? I am blowing the same fuse and loosing brake lights and turn signals everytime I hit the brakes. Never had a traile w/ electronic brakes attached to the truck? I replace the fuse and the next time I hit the brakes it blows again and shows a TBC Fault in the display ... 06 250 6.0L.

Thanks!

I just returned from a trailer towing trip with my 2008 6.4 L SD. I started to get the "wiring fault on Trailer" warning message when the trailer was not attached. The initial touch on the brake pedal would give the message warning with the annoying "Beep". With the trailer attached there was no message at any time.

To be fair to Ford, I had new trailer wiring spliced in to give me an outlet near front of box for trailer and camper electrical plug in. I don't like using the rear bumper plug in due to dirt and dust at back of truck.

I was going to visit my Ford dealer to investigate the message but will hold off for a week to see if others had the same problem.

We are getting some 08s with water intrusion into the trailer connector causing this issue. Check the "doors" on your connectors for tight fit.

Anyone and everyone with this problem should call Ford immediately. I just got off the phone to them and they know that there is a problem, but not enough people have called in for them to recall the trailer plug yet. This is what has transpired so far with mine.

1st time: No trailer connected "Wiring Fault on Trailer" message came on. Took it to Ron Carter Ford in Alvin, Tx. They said that the plug was full of water. They cleaned it out, sprayed silicone on it and sent me on my way.

2nd time: It rained. Still no trailer connected. Message came back. Took it to Gulf Coast Ford. They said that Ron Carter did not reset the codes. Said that nothing was wrong with the plug, sent me on my way.

3rd time: It rained. No trailer. Message came back. Ron Carter changed their story. Nothing wrong with the Ford factory plug. Said it was the one I had installed in the bed for the 5th wheel. Took it to River Parish RV where it was installed. Owner said nothing was wrong with his plug, but HE CHANGED IT OUT ANYWAY. Thanks Kenny! Then, it rained.

4th time. Now the message comes on, blinks, beeps, blinks in sync with the right turn signal, beeps whenever I press the brakes......Took it in to LaMarque Ford in Kenner, LA. They called last night and said to come pick up the truck. THERE IS NOT FIX FOR IT!!!!! Unbelieveable! They told me that they had done what the Ford bulletin said to do. It didn't fix the problem, so I could just pick up the truck.

I called customer care at Ford. They acknowledged the problem saying that the dealershhip could not change the plug because the problem would come back. The problem seems to be in the design of the plug and they were still DEVELOPING a part that would work properly. In the meantime, I'm stuck in NOLA with a 40' fifth wheel that I have nothing to pull it with. I'm scared to hook up to my brand new truck not knowing if the brake controller will work!!!

CALL FORD. LET THEM KNOW IF YOU'VE HAD THIS PROBLEM. THEY WILL BE FORCED TO RECALL AND ESCALATE THE REPAIR SOLUTION.

I have had "wiring fault on trailer"' a few more time since the quote above. Today, I took it to the RV repair who had installed the extra Electrical Plug in the truck bed. The tests all came out negative so my suspicion is now with the Ford trailer brake controller. I will be at the Ford dealership next Tuesday to log the complaint to help Ford to get some statistics on this problem.

wiring fault on trailer message comes on with trailer hooked up. But everything works fine. The higher I have the gain turned up the more the message pops up. Then theres other times if I use the trailer brakes alot under heavy load, The trailer brake controller will turn off and will read trailer disconected. Thus no trailer brakes. Anyone else have this problem.

If the add on wiring uses the "scotch lock" connectors, there is a potential wiring fault (they are not water tight) You can have the "doors" on the connector fitting tightly, but is water entering on the back side? Not saying it can't happen, but I'm not seeing anything wrong with the controllers. Just verify nothing is wrong with the harness and trailer connectors before you go to the dealer.

Ford called me back yesterday. They confirmed that there is a problem and it is NOT the plug, or the pigtail. They did not state what the problem was exactly, but that Ford was developing a fix. They stated that they will NOT be contacting me when the problem is resolved. I asked the gentleman on the phone if I should take my truck in once a week, checking for a fix. I don't know what to do at this point. He stated that they will not be calling, e-mailing, writing, or otherwise publish that there was a fix for my truck.

I guess I'll just call Ford everytime the thing beeps at me. I'd be on the phone alot!.
