1965 Styleside bumper mounting advice

<TABLE><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top width="100%">Need some advice on bumper brackets for a 1965 slick and how they are properly attached.

I have found a set of rusty brackets which after a treating with naval jelly, appear to be fairly solid. There are two "C" shaped straight flat brackets (inner) with two frame mounting holes and two bumper mounting holes, then there are two brackets (outer) fabricated from flat steel with two mounting holes for the bracket to the frame, and one for the upper outside bumper mount. When viewed from the rear, the flat steel of the outer bracket twists out from the frame mount and bends upward to attach to the outer bumper mount (i.e the single bolt hole on the top of the bumper, not the inner upper and lower bumper mounting holes)

First question..do these sound like the correct brackets? I bought them sight unseen from a guy on Craigslist. He tells me they came from a 1970 F-100 and while the geometry appears correct, I don't want to pull off the old bumper and start messing around if I don't have the right brackets.

Second question, assuming I have the right brackets. Can someone help me understand how these four brackets attach to the frame? I am swapping out a step bumper for the simple chrome bumper and have a tangled mess underneath that includes a frame mounted trailer hitch, associated wiring, lines running to air shocks etc.

Working from left to right (driver to passenger side), I would like to know is it left outer bracket, frame, left inner bracket on the left frame rail and right inner bracket, frame, right outer bracket on the right frame rail or do the brackets get bolted together on one side of the frame etc? If a seasoned veteran could save me the hassle of trial and error or if someone has a schematic I would really appreciate it.

Your excellent description matches the illustration in the parts book. Brackets are the same 1964/72. The inner brackets are shaped more like this: [ than C

Thanks Bill, you are correct the the brackets are shaped like this ---> "[" and "]", not like a "C". I will give it a try. Also wanted to thank you for all of your advice on this forum. You have helped me solve two questions (horn and bumper) directly and I have learned a ton from other posts where you have responded with parts numbers. Great to have easy access to someone with your considerable experience.

I have the same truck you do, and that comes in handy when ppl ask questions on the 1961/66's. I also did a frame off resto on mine (I'm the original and 4th owner), and that also helps.
