I hope you guys can help? I have done a lot of searching to find info on this topic. My truck is a 96' F-350 crew cab powerstroke. I have a tymar intake and a 3" basic straight pipe exhasut, but I noticed that I do have a small after market converter in the exhaust so I guess that means it's not a true straight pipe. Any how my question is that I just bought a superchips 1700 and did the program. My truck does have more power and torque, but it dosent smoke at all. Is that cause of the converter. I think it even smoked a little more before I put the program on. Shouldn't it be the other way around? And can any body tell me if its worth the extra money to get the 1705 programer or does somebody know of a better programer I should get? I think I have seen about all of them. I just need help with knowing which one actually is the better choice. Maybe some experiences might help. Thanks guys
there are alot of better choices than the superchip. Most muti position chips easpically those from total diesel performance (tony wildman) and Dp-tuner will blow your doors off. for any tuner/chip you should have guages though. at the minimum a pyrometer to make sure your exhasut temps aren't out of control.
also the cat converter isn't aftermarket its stock. Does your exhaust include a new round downpipe off the turbo? if not you should look into those also before a chip.
I am gonna throw this out there as it relate to this forum, I was pulling a light load...about 9000 lbs the other day, not working my truck much at all, some small rolling hills for about a 20 min drive freeway speeds 2300 rpm, pulled into the fuel station and as it idled while I refueled, there was a higher than normal amount of whitish smoke coming out of the exhaust, after about 5 min it went back to no visible exhaust, like normal. My truck mods are noted in my sig block, and I was running in the 100 hp setting. I do not have guages. Is this excess smoke normal, or a bad sign?
well I don't know about normal or even what it could be but I would keep a close eye on oil and coolant levels for the next few days. I would also no recommend towing or even driving in that high of a setting with out getting a pyrometer first. This is apple to oranges but with my setup empty on the 70 hp setting on my chip I can hit 1200 degree's granted it WOT to about 65 mph but it still gets there quite easily.
Okay So you say that these other brands are better. Is it becasue they just run cooler or what is that they do so much better? Also you really didnt say anything about the smoke issue. Shouldn't my truck be putting out some smoke now even with just the superchip program. I believe thats what I was told that when you use a perfromance program like that it makes the diesels smoke. Also FYI my truck looks a lot like yous
they seem to be better because what other are saying is the make more power with better exhaust temps. Also smoke depends on what program you run. if you are on the highest setting I would say it should smoke some but I have no expereicen with the 1705. my truck will only smoke when I roll into the throttle at higher speeds and smoke some when I am from a stand still at WOT it will haze a bit

Thanks TJ, I guess I knew all that but it is good to hear it from the smart guys, guess that is justification for guages... Also what is WOT?
Okay, I have basicly decided to go with a dp- tuner, but my question is what setting do you prefer on it. I looked at the web site and it had a lot of options but each one cost more, so what options are the best for these particular trucks? And lastly are these that different from a tsp or bulldog 6-postion tuner?
