I don't use my 96 EB for 4 wheeling. Can the front drive shaft be removed? This might stop the front chunk from roaring and increase fuel economy. Any thoughts?
Sounds like you have problems. I believe you might be having hub lock problems and if so, removal of the driveshaft buys you nothing. If you have the usual automatic locks, they are prone to problems. The driveshaft and all related parts do not turn when you are out of four wheel. Therefore, there shouldn't be any noise coming from the frontend.
i agree with the first response, get rid of your automatic hubs & install manual ones. a good set of manuals will run you around $100 &
take less than an afternoon to install. keep them unlocked for less wear & tare & possiably better mileage, then if you ever need you front drive you still have it.
If you are wanting to remove the front driveshaft for fuel economy, then go right ahead. Just remember that 4WD won't work if needed. You will gain maybe 1-2 mpg due to the weight loss of the front driveshaft. Not really a big difference if you ask me. For the best increase in fuel economy, lift up on the right foot a little when driving!
The front d/s weighs *maybe* 20lbs. This might gain you .0001 mpg. If the front d/s is spinning something is wrong, either your auto hubs are malfunctioning or the push-button 4wd is malfunctioning. Both of these items malfunction on a regular basis. As stated above, if everything is working as intended nothing in the front end will spin and you lose nothing in fuel economy as a result. It's most likely your auto hubs IF the front d/s is spinning in 2wd. But you just mention a clunk - go find the source of that clunk if that is what is bothering you.
