I have a '91 F150 with the 300 Six which I converted to 5-speed. So I needed a new ECU and gustang818 generously gave me one for an '87 model. It has worked fine except it has a part-throttle miss which I attributed to too much EGR. In order to make sure of my diagnosis, I blocked the vac line to the EGR valve and expected the CEL to come on, but it did not. Did the '87 300 not have an EVP sensor? If not, what year did Ford start using the EVP sensor?
EDIT
The information I have shows the 1986 & 1987 5.0 & 5.8 has EVP sensor and the 4.9 does not.
The 88 information is showing all of the engines having one.
They all used pin#27 of the ECU.
Check the codes. From my experience, the check engine light won't come on for the EGR valve not opening. If you unplug the EVP sensor, the light should come on. I can't imagine why an 87 would be any different than an 88 4.9 and the 88 in my book has an EVP. Try pulling the codes and unplugging the sensor and see what happens.
I will do that later in the week, I just plugged the line this morning before driving to work. I had done this previously for the same reason with my old ECU (the one that came with the truck) and the CEL came on almost immediately.
My 87 5.0 computer seems pretty resistant to turning on the check engine light (maybe because 87's did not have a functioning check engine light), so maybe your 87 4.9 computer acts the same way.
