When I had this problem in my 90 Bronco, it turned out to be several things. The key would turn in the tailgate switch, but the itty bitty button type thing inside the switch assy was not getting pushed properly because the switch assy was coming apart inside. You can feel the switch actuate when you turn it side to side all the way. I don't remember exactly what I did to fix it, but it worked and it did not involve getting a new switch. The other problem was the wiring coming from the tailgate through to the body. The wiring there had been chafed away (even though it is inside a rubber tube thing) and would short sometimes. I cut out the offending wires and replaced with new. That helped for a while. The last time i fixed the recurring problem, the window was stuck down. I had to remove the inside cover of the tailgate and manually remove the window out of the tailgate till I got access to the wiring. I fiddled with the wiring while holding the key till I got a response from the motor. If I remember correctly, there was a junction below the motor where the wire running horizontally joins the vertical wire going to the motor. That junction was loose. I taped it up tight and I think it is working till this day. I forget what I did to get the motor to run with the gate down in order to make these repairs easier. COuld not have been too hard though; I'm no genious.

The power window drive gears are plastic, and strip. Window will barely move, or not move at all. Common problem with Fords since 1965. A new gear kit can be purchased at auto parts stores. If someone asks, you want the late gear kit (1970/1990's). Here's the Ford part number:

D0AZ-62234A24-B .. Gear Kit-Power Window (this kit is used on your front door window motors as well)
