I think you need to change the tail shaft also. but the ZF came in both configurations so you could do it. you are not going to be able to use the transfer case off of a Mazda tranny though you need to get the right one.
Yes it can be done but you have to put the 4X4 tailshaft and tailshaft housing onto the 4X2 transmission. It will involve some transmission disassembly and tapered reassembly. For many years Ford has used a standard 6 bolt pattern for mounting the transfer case to the tailshaft housing. It doesn't matter what your old 4X4 trans was [C6, AOD, E4OD, or Mazda], the transfer case will bolt onto the ZF.
The Ford Service Manual for your truck will have it. You can get it for about $10 on cd from ebay. You might find one there on paper but they are more expensve. Helm will also have them in paper.
