Looking for some opinions on my latest issue with my 95. I've notcied that my GPR does not engage all the time. Cold or not...it sometimes does not "click" and my truck won't start...of course. This morning I had to "turn on/off" the ignition about 5 times before it engaged. Would this be a GPR problem....GP problem...or am I going to start looking at another electrical issue?....Having done it in other vehicles....looking for electrical gremlins is very, very time consuming.
I changed my GPR in january 2006....could it be bad already? and 4 of eight GP this winter...
Looking for some suggestions....cause I tend to find all my answers on here...this board rocks!!
best thing to do is get a friend to operate the key and use a test light to test the relay. first see if the power is tranferring to the seond large terminal. if not does it click? if its does you more than likely need a new relay, if it doesn't click then you need to check the 2 small wires. one is battery power constant the other is PCM supplied ground. I would disconnect both small wires to test them. connect your test light clamp to battery ground then see if either of them have power with the key on. if one does then you good there. the other will be PCM supplied/switched ground. hook you test light clamp to battery positive and turn the key on. if the test light then your good, if not then you have a wiring or PCM issue. I have seen the PCM driver go bad without any other issues on the truck.
more than likely you will have a bad relay. if all the wiring tests good go get another relay.
It sometimes clicks....sometimes doesn't.... When it does....truck starts real good...almost no hesitation....I will check the wireing as soon as I can...
Thanks....
It's odd that it's intermittent....doesn't this stuff...work....or doesn't? This truck is sooo tempermental....must be "female" truck HAHAHA
Ykonskly I've been having electrical gremlins, too. Just posted about them: "Charge Bleeding MY TRUCK IS DRIVING ME CRAZY". But in that post I forgot to mention a couple of things, one of which is almost identical to your problem.
a few times, my WTS light has not gone on when I turned to start position - I'm assuming the GPs didn't turn on either. Then, after another few tries, they went on as normal.
Then, there's all the stuff in my post, as well as two other wierd things:
once and a while, when I turn off the truck, it doesn't turn off, and there I am with the key in my hand while the truck runs. then I have to stick the key in, and turn it off a few more times before it cooperates.
and, a couple of times, I've had bizzare behavior out of my guages when I first started the truck - guages dropping to zero and bouncing back, with lights flickering, for less then 30 secs, then pretty much normal.
this is all AFTER having replaced my GP relay a few weeks ago. that was the FIRST thing to go.
guess that doesn't help you much, but since we seem to be having potentially similar problems, probly a good idea to keep an eye on each other's progress.
And, what ever happened to that issue you were having with the battery light? Did the simple fix on the wire do it, or was that a bigger problem? (thinking of your posts from back at the end of February).
i"m just now getting time to look at everything....and the fact that untill about a week ago...it was in the minuses here....no desire to work outside. The battery light is still acting up....but hope to get her looked at soon....I remember with other vehicles....when I had to deal with wireing...any wireing...it always ended up costing me big $$$....hope it's different this time
you might try to check you oil temp switch. that and your baro sensor are the only two things that control your GPR. oil temp switch located on the back of the high pressure resevoir, and the baro sensor located uder the dash just to the left of the steering coloum.unplug them when the GPR does not engage and let them set a default value. see if this helps, good luck

you bring up a good point that I left out of my first post. if you find the PCM is not turning on the GP relay then its not automatically a bad PCM like my post hinted at! major oversight on my part. the pcm looks at temps like oil and air temp to decide what to do with the GP's.
