I have a 2000 Eddie Bauer Expedition with around 100k miles. About 2k miles ago I had the transmission rebuilt. About 2 weeks ago the 4x4 light started flashing continously. The vehicle seems to go into 4x4 high and low fine and when we checked for codes there were none. Any suggestions?
This week the Service Engine Soon Light came on and when we checked the codes it said that it was running Lean. We did a Fuel Induction System Cleaning and reset the code and it stayed off for about two days, now the light is back on with the same code "Too Lean". My mechanic thinks the problems are completely independent and that the fuel filter may need changing.
Any suggestions? The vehicle has to be inspected soon and I can't get an inspection in NC with flashing lights or codes.
Welcome Clint. Find out the exact code then do a search at this site. There are many common "lean" codes that have been discussed ad nauseum around here.
You might need to have Ford scan for the problem associated with the flashing 4x4 light.
Thanks for the welcome. Funny how these vehicles are. I have a 96 f150 that has 150k miles and never had a lick of trouble (except the spindel coming off) and this Expedition that has been a pain since day one. What does

The truck's 4x4 system is electronically controlled so if there's a problem, the dealer should be able to run a series of tests to determine what's at fault. I've looked through my manual before and couldn't even begin to try to trouble shoot with all the electronic possibilities.
My light on our 97 expy has flashed in the past, couple times, all I did was cycle it through the 4x4 ranges a few times and it stopped, I believed this to happen becuz
I dont use the system as often as I should or cycle it throught the ranges as you should, for preventitive maintenance once a month at least. This system if not used
tends to get sticky if you dont use it.
Why buy a 4wheel drive if you never use it???? In our case we go over the mountains
and through the snow3 - 4 times a year to pappa's house to snowmobile.
incase your shaking your head at my statement.
I have a 97 expedition with 5.4 in the last few days the awd, 4hi, 4low, low wash, lights all come on at same time and then truck loses all power until the lights go off also now my airbag light has been flashing and staying on and my off light on shift for overdrive is flashing can anyone help????

I am experiencing the same exact problem with the 4x4 light followed by the "Service engine soon" with by 99. The 4x4 HI and Low work fine, the weird thing is that even though I don't feel the 4x4 kicking in with the AWD, my mpg has dropped from 13 to 10 mpg. Wondering if you or anybody can share what fix was necessary and how much it costed. - Thanks.
There was no fix. When I took it to Ford they said the speed sensors were shot. I had them removed and when they pulled them they were full of metal. The mechanic said that the transfer case was in need of replacement but we put new ones in and now the 4x4 High kicks in for about the first two miles one each start so I ended up pulling the plug on the 4x4 and all is fine now I just don't have 4 wheel drive. I will never buy another ford.
I had the flashing 4x4 light a couple of years ago. It annoyed me for 2000 miles driving accross country. It was a bad sensor on the transfer case. I had both sensors replaced and it's been swell ever since.
I learned that when the sensor goes, the AWD system defaults to two wheel drive, but you can switch to full time 4hi and 4 low.
The "full of metal" diagnosis sounds odd...I am not sure how one of those sensors could be "full of metal."
I've seen this twice, one was due to water getting into the compter from a leaky windshield seal (this caused other electronic oddities as well). The second time I couldnt figure it out but the dealer replaced a sensor (I want to say it was on the rear end) and it got rid of the flashing 4x4 light.
also now my airbag light has been flashing and staying on
When the airbag light first comes on, see if it is flashing a code ( a series of flashes and pauses of the air bag indicator light) before it goes on solid.
Thanks for all the input. I have done several searches, this one is my exact scenario. Keep them coming. I will be taking it in to the shop within a week or tow. I will post what they found for future reference.
I just got the Expy back from the transmission shop. I was told that transfer case clutch and the coupler were completely shot. The entire transfer case had to be rebuilt.
Parts: $2,034
Labor: $804.00
Total w/tax: $2,621.40 1yr/12K warranty for the rebuild.
They also cleared up my "service engine" light. They did tell me that they added a few more electrical parts, but did not charge me. I hope this was to replace a sensor.
The shop is registered with the BBB and is a A BBB Accredited business since 2/28/2001. The shop was clean, busy, and did not seem to be in the business of bending people over.
So far so good. I will come back and report if something goes wrong, otherwise, expect that all problems were fixed. I will also report back if my mpg does not return back to normal, 13 MPG.
