Safety is job one. I think NASCAR is on to something good here. They moved the driver farther away from the door. added down force, forward and aft. cars are taller. Wheel base is shorter. I like it when they can walk away from a wreck....
What I heard was they require drivers to drive. That they are more like the cars of the day. I didn't see anything real different watching the race today. I wish they would just run them. Just get on with getting on with the COTs.
The worst problem I heard about with the design was the splitter sticking out past the side of the car and either cutting a tire or knocking the tire valve off. That shouldn't be a problem I would think if it persists. The handling of them will come as the teams get used to them and it might require the drivers to get up on the wheel a little more. That they should be safer is a big plus, but I still don't like the looks of them that much. They claim that teams will be able to reduce the amount of cars they need since this will run all the tracks in the end, but I have a hard time believing that. I think in the end they will end up building special cars for the different tracks that are tweaked just a little more to get an advantage.
I think the verdict is out until they get to one of the bigger tracks, aerodynamics are not really a big factor at Bristol.
Agreed, Texas, Atlanta, or Talledega should be the real test. I also agree with K-dog and just use the COT all the time instead of jumping back and forth. I have no clue why NASCAR would "phase" it in like they are. They are really separating the big budget teams from the underfunded teams.
I guess time will tell on how much cheaper it will be for everyone.
I say that if the COT helps make NASCAR safer, thats a good thing. If a common body makes it like IROC and ends the sandbagging and whining that certain brands have an advantage, thats a good thing too.
Everyone always whines when NASCAR makes a change (even if its a change for the good), but after a while everyone gets used to it, stops whining and gets back to racing.
