wire harness

OK this started two days ago. the truck was running fine then started missing. the alternator stop working. then the truck died.OK what is next. well i figure i would poke a round and that is when i found the wire harness burnt. 7 wires were almost right through and one was broke in half. so some splicing and soldering got them back together. well OK can i buy just this harness it is on the driver side. over top of the injector cover what would it be called. thanks.

Is it the side going toward the engine (~500 form ford) or the side going toward the fender (~800 from Ford)

That is the main engine bay harness it starts at the driverside headlight and wraps around the engine bay to the passengerside headlight. It connects everything to the PCM and Battery Junction Box that is the 42 Pin leg you have there. Ford wants close to 800 for it But I got one under 500 here http://www.trademotion.com/storefron...&siteid=214072. You will have to call them and have your VIN handy the harness is specific to vehicle options.

I replaced both of those harnesses last summer, about a 6 hour job but it wasn't too bad. If you solder them and use heat shrink with the weatherproof goo inside it should work fine. Ford and IH sell a repair kit that has the connector with about 6 inches of wire and the heatshrink but you will have to splice all 42 wires.

Just curious... Was the bad area of harness laying on top of valve cover? I remember seeing another post about the insulation wearing from movement from the top of the valve cover.. I checked mine and it was laying on the cover.. I bent the main bracket that holds the connector back abit and it allowed the harness to raise up off the valve cover.. I feel for ya...How many miles on the engine?

I am not in favor of soldering wires back together in a vibration prone area. I work on aircraft and soldering is not a recommended way of repairing wires. After awhile they crack and break and cause all kinds of wierd electrical issues. What I like to use if I can't replace the wire is environmental splices(sometimes called marine splices). They crimp like a regular splice but then you use a heat source like a heat gun and it shrinks and seals the cover. You can pick them up at most automotive stores. They are a little spendy but work very well.

I agree with nodkaford! I had the same problem a few months ago and use enviromental splices and they have held up! I used shrink tubes, electrical tape and then and heavy duty chaff tape.
