So here's the setup. A stock 302 from a 71 Torino with Holley Carb mated up to an older (non electronic) AOD using a Lokar Throttle Valve Cable. The tranny has been rebuilt but I have yet to get it to shift quite correctly. It shifts fine under normal acceleration but once I get up to a cruising speed on the downtown streets it shifts up one gear too many so the motors going only 1000 rpm. When I need to speed up it won't downshift unless I smash down on the pedal. I tried setting the TV cable with a pressure gauge using the proper specs ,28-33 psi with a 3/8th inch spacer pulling the cable while in neutral, but the gauge reading is way over the required psi when I put in the correct spacer. I'm rather baffled at this point! Any advice besides taking it to a Ford dealership and having my wallet raped? Thanks!
Dont go to Ford to have this looked at, it wouldnt be worth it. Find a reputable transmission guy. Seems to me theres something wrong with a valve or 2 in the valve body. Check the vaccum line that comes from the modulator, that could have trans fluid in it from being a bad/leaking which could be causing the fast upshifting. Take a peak at that first. Ummm if it doesnt downshift normal whoever rebuilt it mighta missed something during the re-assembly.
AOD has no vacumn controls. You might try setting the throttle pressure up some. When I was working in a dealership I worked on a lot of police cars. We had the best results for longevity and shift quality at 40-42psi with the proper testing spacer on the linkage.
