Hello all. On my '93 Aerostar, 3L the park lock on the shifter has been acting up. In the manual it says that if theres no brake lights then the fuse is blown. But I have brake lights. But I can shift from Park sometimes no problems. Then sometimes it is locked solid, can't get the darn thing to move sometimes. Any ideas what part is involved? Thanks.
I'm back. But just somemore info that may well be the problem. I spent a bit of time later today under the dash. From what I can figure, the brake light switch is at fault for the nuisance park lock. I find that when I get the shifter so it won't move and stuck in Park, I also find theres no brake lights just at that time. I wiggle the brake light switch and voila theres brake lights and then I can shift out of Park too. I did this several times. So then I got the test light out, and did basically the same thing. When I pull slightly down on the switch I can get the test light to go off, and can't shift from Park. (The switch pivots ever so slightly up and down on the pin that goes through the pedal and the linkage, I assume it should be very tight and not move up or down like its ever so slightly loose.) If I just tap the switch a hair, the test light comes on, and the shifter works! Theres a small spring in the middle of that switch, and amongst other things I assume its just seen better days. The contacts will be fried no doubt. It just seems very touchy. And its not the wires or the plastic plug either. I was sure to make sure that it wasn't a bad connection. I can hold the switch still and push and pull the wires and plug and the test light stayed on. As soon as I moved the switch itself a bit, the light went straight off.
The switch is just worn out, when you remove it, there will more than likely be a small groove worn in the flat plate that contacts the brake pedal. Just replace it and you'll be fine. This will also affect the cruise control if equipped.
OK, I had the new stop light switch a few days, as I mention in the posts above. Now I notice that when I release the brakes, the switch makes a click noise a moment later. Every time. It was sort of annoying. The original factory switch never made any noise when released. So anyway, I then went to replace the new switch again with another from Ford themself this time, only a few dollars. Now it also makes the same click a moment after you release the brakes too! Must be in the design. Some sort of delayed action so the brake lights stay on a moment after the brake pedal is fully released? If I turn the radio up, that covers the noise. But with the radio off, theres still that odd click....just the sort of thing to drive you mad. Especially if I'm crawling through traffic and braking on and off for a while. Its not very loud, just that its there.
Anyone else have this on a new switch or have it on their original factory switch? I am 100% sure the original one did not do this. Thanks.
