Hi, I have a question about torqueing heads down. I am under the impression that using an extension changes the torque properties of the wrench. Is this correct and if so what tool or calculation is best used for the heads and the rest of the 302 engine. Please help I'd like to get started tommorow. Thanks. :7
Cold, use no oil. Make sure all your gaskets and surfaces are CLEAN!!! Torque to about 1/2 value first in order then proceed to 3/4 value in order then to full value in order. Then re-check each bolt in order. An socket extension is okay but don't use an extension for leverage. Use a quality torque wrench and not one that has been used for other things because of it's size. When in doubt check all the bolts for a third time in order.
The only thing I would add to the above post is that you are sure to start in the center of the head with the top bolt. Being sure to work your way out in a box X pattern. Do not stop until you have all the bolts done. In other words don't drink a 6 pack or stop for a sexual encounter with the cute UPS driver until you have the head completely torqued down.
Use the extention for your initial torque sequences. After the final, take the extention and check things again with just a socket, (or just use a deep well socket in the first place.) The longer the extention the more your actual value will be off.
Yep, the extension can twist (although not much), and can "fool" the torque wrench in thinking it reached the proper torque. I recommend taking Howdy's advice and use the extension on the 1/2 value, and maybe even the 3/4 value, but not for the final value.
