Question Tranny Swap Question ????

Ok here it is the e4od in my 92 4x4 F150 is going south I have a 85 F150 with a manuel Tranny I want to swap in. I know I will need the flywheel for 92 (300 6) the 85 has a 302 in it and the flywheels wont interchange. I think (hope !) that all the parts off of the 85 will bolt on without any modification ex. clutch pedal ,cylinder, etc.
The big question is will the truck still run alright when I unplug the Electronics on the e4od ?? If anybody knows what other problems I might run into I would appreciate all the help thanks guys and gals .

youll also need pedals from a 92 truck and yes the truck will still run fine but your check engine light will probobly come on since the e4od was computer controled

im not sure about the transfercase or drive shafts working because ive never swaped a 4wd truck but they might

Transfer case will bolt up. The driveshafts will need to be lengthened/shortened based upon the difference in length between the manual trans and the E4OD. The 300 six uses a 0 ounce balance flywheel and the late 302 uses a 50 oz. imbalance. Subs1000w is right about the pedals. 80-91 are different from 92-96. One of the other users here did a manual swap from E4OD and reported some issues he thought were computer related. I sent him a 6 cyl manual computer I had laying around. Right afterward he said they seemed to have straightened out. I haven't followed up.

Starting to sound like it might be Easier to put my 92 body on the 85 frame and just run the 302 Still would have to locate pedals but the driveshafts would be right and I wouldnt need to locate a flywheel . The 85 was involved in an easy rollover or I would just drive it .

Sounds like that would work but it will probably be about the same in terms of time/effort/money. I know the frame on the F-150 changed in '92 and I think the bumper mounts a little differently. You could always cut from the 92 and weld onto the 85. I got my pedals at a local salvage yard for $50. The only issue that comes to mind is the '92 speedometer works off the VSS on the rear end. You would have to get one of the VSS units that go into the trans.

Could I just swap the rearends put the 92 rearend in the 85 as long as i swaped the front gearing to match ? Or even better sell all three of them and go buy a decent 79 F150 shortbed that has the 4 speed and the v8 with a straight axel lol

I think the '91 and earlier trucks used the VSS in the trans. My 94 Stang has it also. I'm sure your local junk yard could hook you up. It shouldn't be that big of a deal that you would need to change the rear end.

ok thanks gustang I appreciate the help Do you think the 85 driveshafts would work under the 92 if i change over the tranny and transfer case both . The rear drive shaft in the 92 is 48 inches long and the driveshaft out of the 85 is at least a foot longer but strangley both trucks have the same wheelbase .

They might but you need to measure to be sure. Measure from the front of each trans to the transfer case mounting flange. Since you're going with the shorter trans, the difference between the length of the E4OD and the manual trans will be how much longer than the existing E4OD rear driveshaft should be and the front shaft will be the same amount shorter. If you're really lucky, the '85 shaft(s) will work. My driveshaft guy says you need to keep them within 1/2" of what they should be. I've heard of people not keeping this right and compressing the suspension and breaking the transfer case.

When I did the ZF from E4OD swap on my truck I was fortunate enough to find a front driveshaft that was the correct length. Finding the correct rear shaft was a nightmare and I finally had to get one made. It was about $100.

This truck spends alot of its time in the woods climpimbing over rocks stumps and log skidder ruts I will measure them as you suggest I would really hate to have one to short and have it fall out when the suspension is at its max. I just replaced the rear shaft in the 92 had to go back to the junk yard three times before they could find the right one to fit it and it Cost $125.00 seems ford thought it needed 4 diffrent shafts for this wheelbase in 92
