Hey guys, new to the site and any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a 2001 psd with 180,000 miles. I used to get 14 to 18 mpg. In December I installed a 4" turbo back exhaust, and since then I have only gotten around 10 mpg at best. Other than this the truck is all stock. I have changed the fuel and air filter and oil. The truck is also showing no trouble codes, but does seem to lack power slightly. Any ideas???
In december you also probably switched to winter blend fuel and started letting the truck idle longer to get warmed up didn't you? I would wait and see if it doesn't start getting better over the next few weeks, if not then start looking into it more. The exhaust itself shouldn't make that much of a difference.
True on the winter driving conditions, but the truck does stay in a heated shop with minimal warm up. On several 200 + mile trips it also has not done any better.
If that's the case I would get hold of a code reader and see if anything is going on. You also might want to check your catalytic converter, if you still have one, and see if it is clogged. I seem to remember someone on here saying they were losing power and mileage and found out thier cat was clogged.
I did have the truck in to a mechanic who told me there were no codes present, he also tested the turbo and injection pump, and they were both fine. This truck did not have a converter on it and the muffler was replaced with the exhaust. ????
Check for boost and/or exhaust leaks. Tends to happen to our trucks often, causing loss of power and mileage. There are a total of 6 intercooler boots that you need to check. The clamps should be very tight, and also look for cracks. Also check out the exhaust manifolds and up-pipes for any sign of soot. The donuts on the up-pipes behind the turbo are a common leak spot, you'll probably need a mirror to check them out.
Do you have gauges? A boost and pyro gauge would really help you see what's going on. With any kind of boost or exhaust leak, you would see lower than average boot numbers, and higher EGT's.
The intercooler boots sound like a great thing to check. No guages at this time, but it sounds like a good reason to install some! I did have the the drivers side exhaust manifold and a short piece of pipe replaced last fall, but mileage was good several months after that.
I'll check the boots and get back with the results, thanks guys.
