alternator life???

just wondering what kind of life others are seeing on the alternators. just to warn some--- i had a 96 EXP with 155,000 alternator fail. Opened it up and the brass rings the brushes ride on were about worn thru. Shorted out and blew out the diodes. Had a F150 with 145,000 that i had changed out last year. Opened it for comparison and the brass rings were about gone in it also. Just a warning. 150K appears to be a good number for life.

I would call 150K a high average from what I've seen. It might go before that, but after 150K is when you really need to be on the lookout. Mine went somewhere around 140K, but didn't die all the way. Just started losing voltage at high RPM.

I removed mine at 230k miles thinking that the brushes would be worn out at least. Actually, they were in great shape......but I replaced them anyway.
Everything else looked fine.
I'm at 270k now and may look at it again when I pull the engine for rebuild.

At 90,000 miles battery light would come on at higher RPM's. Drove it a year like that , got worse, pulled it at 115,000 miles. Went thru 2 NAPA altenators in a month, they worked OK, but bad whine, I mean BAD! They finally got me a Delco, sounds just like the original altenator, maybe a very, very, slight whine at idle under full load, which is normal. Even the guys at NAPA said they have a lot of complaints on that Ray-Loc 130 amp altenator. I have no other experience with a Ray-Loc, so maybe I got a couple from a bad batch, but otherwise they may be fine. It's always a little irritating when you buy something, it doesn't work right, and then when you take it back they agree they are having problems with that product. Makes me feel like my time is at their disposal.

Mine went at 180,000 kms, in the middle of a bunch of mountains, and no cell service for miles around.

I want somebody I know to rebuild mine but that type of specialist is quickly being removed. I'm at 110K and still stock. Might just pull it and take to a person that can treat it right.
