just wondering what kind of life others are seeing on the alternators. just to warn some--- i had a 96 EXP with 155,000 alternator fail. Opened it up and the brass rings the brushes ride on were about worn thru. Shorted out and blew out the diodes. Had a F150 with 145,000 that i had changed out last year. Opened it for comparison and the brass rings were about gone in it also. Just a warning. 150K appears to be a good number for life.
Hey, let's just all be glad these trucks aren't made by GM. I've owned a few of those POS cars, you're lucky to get 50K out of an alternator, sometimes 30K.
My Citroen ZX 1995 has 270k on it but still not alternator problem. I'll keep in mind your tip on the 150k with my 2003 Explorer which has 77k on it now. But I thought alternators has no brush issues. I thought brush is only for motors, like the ones I changed for the radiator fan motor for the Citroen. The 4 brushes were worn out after 10 years of ownership.
there are two carbon brushes in all the alternators. normally the brushed dont look too bad at 150,000 miles, it is the two brass or copper slipper rings that the brushes ride on that i have seen sugnificant wear on. I have 3 alternators and all three have worn down rings, but only 1 has major brush wear.
