So I just bought a 79 Bronco with a 351M from a guy on here. Looks like he took very good care of it. I was wondering what kind of oil I should run with (I think)160K miles on it.
Dual diesel/gas rated oils (Rotella, Delo, etc.) have the necessary antiwear additive packages for the flat tappet engines. The newer SM rated oils for gas engines have greatly reduced levels of zinc, phosphorous, etc.
For sure. The reman engine needs those additives in the diesel oil for cam break in. I use it in my engine that was rebuilt last year. I'm using Rotella 10W-30. Only problem, that weight is a little hard to find in my local area.
I think you guys have convinced me to switch. I can get a good deal on 15w40 form work anyway (truck shop). My only concern is starting in the winter? Does the higher viscosity make much of a difference?
The additives in diesel oil reduce wear on the cam and lifters even after break in.
Aren't they reducing the additives in diesel oil as well? I can't make a decision to whether run diesel oil or regular oil in my 400. Right now it's regular 10w30 oil. Pressure seems ok.
I was concerned as well about the new CJ-4 rated diesel oils. So concerned in fact that I sent an email to AskShell for info on the new rating (reply from Shell is in a thread in the Oil and Lube Forum entitled "FYI For Those of Us With Flat Tappet Cams"). Essentially, the Shell engineer stated that the CJ-4 rated oils still had 50% more zinc etc. than SM rated gas oils.
