lock outs automatic or manual

Im full of questions, I need to replace the lock outs on my 93 bronco the ones that are on it are automatic and the one on passenger side is staying engaged until I get up to about 40 MPH and I hear it clicking and when I go to slow down it feels like im running over a log then it disengages, but to my question, I can get manual hubs at the local parts house for about 70 bucks but for the automatic I have to go to dealer, I have the push button transfere case and I hate that but too much to change it, so should I go with the cheap manual lockouts witch are probablly more reliable or automatics for the convience, thanks

lock outs automatic or manual

I have Auto hubs on my '84 and I think they are pretty convenient. I've read on this board that the Manual's are much more H.D. I'm having the same problem w/ my hubs w/ them not disengaging and making the noise and the "log" thing. If I wasn't selling it, I'd change 'em out, but they'll have to stay for now.

If you intend to do a lot of off-roading, I'd say change 'em to manual. Of course, w/ the push-button, I'm not sure what to tell you. Maybe someone else can echo on here about this.

Thanks...

Andy,
The cost for the replacement auto hubs may help you decide. Figure a $200.00 "savings" for the manual hubs (Warn, Superwinch, or Milemarker.) vs the new auto's (if done at a shop or dealership
or DIY!

Go w/the manuals, no question. Convenience blah, blah. If you're not willing to step outside to lock the hubs you don't deserve to be driving it.

$200 savings? The dealer here in Denver wanted $250 per side for new auto hubs. The new Warn Premiums were $90 at Napa, so I figured more around a $410 savings! It may also be the year, but for my '94, they only offer an upgraded auto hub set and no parts for the one's I had. I have the pushbutton 4WD, and there isn't any problem. When I think I may need 4WD (snowing or such), I just lock the hubs and leave them locked, then use the pushbutton as normal. Sometimes, it takes a couple of miles to unlock the transfer case, but not too much trouble. If I had to do it again, I would definitely go with the manual hubs. Cheaper and more reliable.

Definitely go with the manual hubs. I found a good set on e-bay about 3 months ago for 65 dollars. I got the Warn Premiums and they are great. I also had the automatics on a 1994 Bronco and boy are these new hubs nice. Very easy to install as well.

go with the manuals. I switched over about 4 mos. ago and love the new ones. I spent about $50-60 on a set of Milemarkers at autozone. It took me about a half hour to swap them out and they are much more reliable than the automatics the truck came stock with. As far as push button 4WD goes just lock the hubs push the button and off you go. No backing up or waiting for the hubs to engage. A flick of the wrist and you are set.

yo ad,
Yes, I meant that if the owner has them replaced:
... with Warn Manual Hubs by a shop - (Local NAPA shop quotes job for $220.00 w/tax)

... or a dealer replaces the hubs w/new auto hubs at ~$450.00 (Southern NJ rural dealership price)
......or maybe just a rebuild kit for the old auto hubs...

and as you said, the DIY swap is the cheaper route!
