All I knew was the year, that's why I listed all three switches. No tilt till 1978. I've wrestled the wheels off by hand too. That's possible for some to do, usually it's fairly easy..if the wheel has been off before. Some are really stubborn, and then the puller is necessary.

I have seen a guy knock himself out by pulling a SW off by force.
I have also seen them break in half from becoming brittle from years in the Sun.

Steering wheel pullers can be had for $5.00 and only take few minutes.

Bill ....Columns get swapped all the time and could have very likely been a tilt.

That's what we contend with on a daily basis here.

I prefer not to assume anything on here anymore.

Check your grounds for your hazard switch before assuming your signal switch is faulty. The current for the signals passes through the hazard. Sometimes wiggling the wires when they are exposed in the hazard switch will find a loose connection.

Looks like I need to clarify the confusion about the wire cutting issue:

Newer trucks have the plastic column trim cover at the top half of the column. These are of the type that the connector will pull on through. Older trucks (like my '74) had no such plastic trim plate, and you had to unplug each wire from the connector as mentioned in an earlier post to get the wires through. There is no room for the connector to pass through the older columns due to their narrow design. Remember to make a quick diagram to get the wires back to their proper place.
I have purchased signal switches many times from the junkyard, and they have all worked. If not, the junkyards would happily let me exchange for another.

As far as steering wheel removal? I have removed dozens without any special tools... Main nut I think is a 15/16 socket, then with a little finess, wiggle gently side to side, up and down while pulling steadily outward. Experience helps, but don't think that just because you don't feel it coming loose that your efforts are in vain... It WILL eventually come out. Just be ready for the sudden release and you will be fine.
Nowadays, the pullers really are available for cheap, but I will never buy one unless the day comes that my method won't work.

When you pull your steering wheel off, you will see the hazard switch, and the signal switch w/cancel cam.
You would be surprised at how many things will work or not work when one of these circuits gets messed up... It took me a long time to trace a problem the first time it happened to me! Basically, if you get any kind of a signal light or brake light problem, the best order of things to do is: 1)check your bulbs and change if necessary 2)check your bulb sockets and change if necessary 3) pull your steering wheel and check your hazard switch! I use this as my mantra everytime.
Good luck!
