so teh cop that pulled me over said my bake light is out. after chaseing down the wiring it seems i have a short and also that the turn signal switch is bad. i wanna go to the yard and get one. my question is how hard is it to get it out. autozone wants 70$ for one new.
Yes, you have to pull the wheel, the column trim piece (plastic) the attaches to the dash panel with 4 phillips screws. I think that once you get to that point, the rest is obvious. Also, the T/S lever...it screws out, 1/4" wrench if you cant get it off by hand...

The horn pad is held to the s/wheel with two Philips Head screws~access is backside of the wheel. You will need a wheel puller to remove the steering wheel.
When you pull the wires out of the column, put a rubber band around them with a piece of string attached. Have enough string so some remains outside at the bottom of the column. That way when you re-install the new switch, take the rubber band and string from the old switch put on the new switch, then pull the string, and the wires will feed down the column.
NOTE: Make sure you mark where each color coded wire comes out of the plug, otherwise...

I have been able to remove many a steering wheel both grabbing either side of the wheel and rocking it back and forth very carefully and pulling towards yourself. Obviously you need to remove the nut first. Be careful not to damage the steering shaft or break the wheel. Also if you are pulling to hard when it decides to let go, you might be going to the dentisit for a cap or two if your not careful. In the event that you do not have a steering wheel puller you might be able to try this to remove the wheel. But again sometimes they are really on there and again don't damage anything.
If you think you have to cut wires to remove the switch, You are doing it wrong!!!!
There should be a gray crescent shaped connector on the end under the dash with a red plastic insert in the middle. Pry the red insert out and the wires will easily remove from the gray plastic connector and then pull up through the column.
I like to use a string 2X longer than the column with a slip knot in the middle to pull the wires through the column one at a time. Just pull the empty string back up for the next wire.
speaking of the "or else" does anyone have a wiring diagram for that connector with color description. it seems to me the colors dont always match color for color. tracy
If the plastic column trim piece is removed @ the dash, no cutting or fishing of wires should be necessary...No need to undo the wiring from the crescent connector either. I know I have only done it once or twice, but it's not that difficult...
uh, didnt know this was possible, my trim piece is metal, but i dont see how? i want to verify that something is not already wrong before i in stall new swith, instead of possibly hooking it up wrong like the old one. thanks
I have nothing to advise on the specific fix,but this thread is really what this forum is all about /members stepping up to really hammer out anothers problem.NICE
