turn signal switch replacement

im needing to replace my turn signal switch as just the weight of the turn signal arm pulls the switch down and makes it blink left unless you drive holding the turn signal switch in the middle position. i have one ordered should be in tomorrow so i figured i would get the old one out tonight and be ready to throw the new one in. i removed the steering wheel un screwed the switch when i couldn't find a plug i removed the gear shift housing hoping to find a plug there. but none is to be found. it looks as if you have to fish all the wires up threw the column and new ones back in. to do that you would have to un pin the connector. im hoping someone tells me there is a easier way.

Nope, the method you've described is how you do it. Yes, it's a pain.

Unplug the switch under the dash. There should be a red wedge in the end of the plug. Once the red wedge is removed, use a small pick to release the small tab that holds each wire in. Make note of which hole each colored wire is going in. Once you snake the new switch wires thru column, installation is reverse of disassembly. Push wires into the holes they were removed from, then insert the red wedge.

Before you pull the turn signal switch out securely tape all of the wires to a long piece of wire. Then pull the switch wit all of the wires out of the steering column. Then tape the wires from the new switch to the single wire and use that to pull them back down the column. This makes it a lot easier to get the wires down to the bottom.

I would suggest a similar method to what 77blue posted. Tape all of your wires to a straightened out coat hanger and use that to run your wires through the column. I'm looking at having to do the same thing myself.

Glad you got it done. I know all too well about doing things the hard way.

Ensure that you get a diagram correct, many times the wires are so faded and dirty that you can easlly loose track of what goes where
