Draining tranny ???

Hello I have 01 supercrew 5.4 4x4 with 72000 miles. Well it is time do some transmission fluid and filter swap. I looked under and saw on the torque converter a black plug. What is behind thata drain plug? How much and what kind of fluid are you putting in it? Filter?

I am getting it ready to tow my dutchman 30'.

Thanks
Steve

That is the access hole for the torque converter drain if it has one. You will have to look to verify. I've heard that some do and some don't. You'll have to turn the engine over to look for it. It should be a 4R70W trans. That takes Mercron V only. It should say on the top of the dipstick. If you drain the pan and converter, I'm thinking around 13qt's to fill it up.

what do you mean turn engine over to look for it? Is it under that black plug?

Yes, but it turns with the torque converter as the engine turns, so you will probably need to bump the engine over until it gets to the bottom.

You can also put the tranny in N and use a screw driver to turn the TC, it is tedious but you don't have to keep getting under there to see if it is visible after turning the engine over.

Would it hurt anything to turn it the wrong way when trying to get the plug at the bottom?

It shouldn't hurt anything no matter what way you spin it, but remember the tranny has to be in N. When I did the AODE (early 4R70) in my Grand Marquis I pulled the coolant lines and started the car and let it pump the tranny fluid out, thats the easy way to do it, I also drained the TC. You then fill the tranny and pump it out until the new fluid starts coming out of the line.

Thanks Galaxie, I'll make sure it's in neutral when I pry on the flywheel teeth.

You can actually just wedge a screw driver into the TC hole and pry on the TC itself, takes a few seconds to figure out the right angle but it works great.

It does not have to be in neutral. You are better off leaving it in Park to be safer. If it is 2001, it should be the last year to use a drain plug. I have the 01 supercab with 5.4 4x4 off road and towing package with the secondary cooler. I used nearly 3 gallons when I did a complete drain.

Would it be best to change the filter first before changing the fluid???

pull the oil pan and you will drain 5 quarts. the filter is stuck to the bottom of the transmission valves. change it out. there will be crud all over the oil pan, clean it real good and wipe off the magnet.-- next turn the converter with the screw driver till you see the plug. looks like a 1/8 inch pipe plug. pull it and you will get another 8 quarts out. put loctite sealer on teh plug and put it back in.--- now add 13 quarts of fluid into the dip stick hole. use MERCON V, dont put anything else in it, no matter what anyone tells you. ATF is not MERCON V.
