I have an 88 Full size Bronco and the rear power window stopped working. Both the key mechanism on the tailgate and the switch on the dash will not operate it. I looked at the fuse and it appeared OK. Any suggestions on how to get the window down and the tailgate opened to work on it? Or any way to test to see what the problem is?
SEARCH on this forum under tailgate. It is a VERY common topic and all the answers and links are posted. I am not trying to put you off it is information that is already printed.
My window stopped working as well (I have a '93). Turned out that the rubber weatherstriping was drying out - I just lubed it up with some silcone spray and the window started to move again. Not sure if this will solve your problem, but it's worth a shot.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-May-02 AT 08:11 AM (EST)]Check this out!
Check the relay that tells the motor not to run if the gate is open. Mine was stuck open and would not allow me to operate the rear window from the front switch or the rear key. My latch relay went bad and I simply cut the two wires leading to the relay and spliced the two together to bypass that relay all together. The relay is located just about the keyhole inside the gate towards the outside corner.
If that doesn't work check your switch on the instrument panel. My switch never worked for me and when I opened it up I found out why. They were made very poorly. Both contacts inside the switch have to be grounded in order for the rear key to drive the motor. Mine were not and I was stumped as to why I could no longer lower the motor with the key. Turns out both contacts were making contact with the ground inside the switch. So, after looking high and low on the internet for another switch I soldered the two connections together and voila! I can now operate the window with the rear key with no problems but am unable to use the switch up front until I find a replacement.
My window also was NOT working. I had to press on the tailgate in order to get the window to work. I adjusted the post that the latch catches on in order to get it working again.
If you can access the inside of the tailgate from inside your bronco and remove the panel in the center of the gate. You sould be able to temporarily prop the window and unscrew the window motor. Then just test the motor is see if it is bad. That is my guess not knowing any more info.
