Hey,
I just bought a 90 Bronco XLT (last night actually ) and already love it. But none of the power windows work. When you press the button you can hear the motors whirring, but the window doesn't go anywhere. If you press the button and push the window at the same time it works though. Is this a motor problem or something else? Since the windows stay down/up/wherever in between I put them, I figured the control arms must be moving, no?
A friend of mine said he found someplace that said a rheostat behind the battery was to blame, and that cleaning the terminals fixed the problem, any idea whether that's a possibility or where to find it? (I've googled to no avail)
As I said, none of the power windows work, including the rear window. Anyone know if the switch on the tailgate can be bypassed in the same manner as that on wagoneers? (is the wiring similar to find/splice?)
If anyone has any further information I'd love to hear it. I don't want to replace all the motors if I don't have to... but it would be nice to be able to open/close the tailgate at least.
I searched for "window" (figured it would give me the most results) and didn't find much more than shot motors... I'll search some more though...
So much in common its a little freaky, lol. I also have a 90 Bronco and I just fixed my window motors last weekend. If you push the button and can hear the motor run, I will say it is exactly the same as me. It is those plastic bearings inside the motor. They are easy to fix. The hardest thing is getting the motor out. As far as the tailgate goes:
Remove the access panel and remove the 3 bolts holding the motor in place. I HIGHLY recommend supporting your glass with something. Once you have the motor down, you don't have to completely remove it if you don't want. Take out the screw and you will see the mess the plastic bearings have made. Clean them all out and put either the same type of bearing in, which you can find all over ebay for about $5 or do like I did. I went to Wally world and picked up some fishing sinkers and they fit in there perfectly. Replace the gear and place the motor back in the tailgate. Should work like a charm.
This should pretty much work for each of the windows in your rig. Hope this helps...
I think that's it... I just tore it up (short of drilling the door to get the motor out) and checked voltages and the like. I think the switch is gone for the locks, but I can hear the motor and it is trying and it is getting power... guess I'll have a look-see after school. (though I'm considering dremeling out the panel in front of the motor instead of just drilling... think that's a good idea or bad? I am steady with a dremel, I wouldn't cut anything I didn't mean to...)
Thanks for the help so far!
(Thank God for the internet, or is that Al Gore I should thank? )
Thanks, that's where I got my hypothesis of the switch being dead for the locks, but since the motors are running, I'm led to believe the window switch is still fine.
However, if someone has the drawings for the circuit of the lock switch, it would be very nice to try to wire my own before I go spend cash on a new one... (eh? eh? eh?)
For the cutting. My thinking is it would make getting the motor in/out a bit easier. Feel free to hollar if I'm wrong/retarded.
Drill out the rivets and replace them with nuts and bolts. If you cut out the panel what are you going to do.....weld it back in? Then next time you need to work on one it will be harder to deal with.

0.o my chilton said they were bolted in... guess that does change things...
