Cool need idm

i just had a new wiring harness put on my truck about 2 weeks ago and now my truck died and i took it back to have codes scanned and he said the harness for the heaters in my fuel bowl and the injector drive harness and the IDM were all burned up, anybody have any idea what would cause that?

It may have just been your fuel heater. Most guys unplug them before this happens. The element will come loose in the filter housing and short out.

IDM's are expensive, about 7-800 bucks.
But there is a place in Florida that can reprogram them for about $250.
I didn't know about them until after i bought a new from the dealer. From what I have read here, junkyard IDM's are feasible as well.

in our trucks any IDM 94.5 to 03 van or pickup will work. the newer ones are a bit of an upgrade. the older will also work in the newer trucks but its a down grade.

Just learning about diesels, I have a 97 F350. I think I should dissconnect my fuel heater, if it is not necessary. Why is it there?
Is it just a matter of unplugging it from a connector at filter? Would it be necessary to plug in again in real cold weather? I sure don't like the thought of dealing with all of the problems caused if it shorts out.

the fuel heater near as I can't tell really isn't needed. I live in michigan and my truck has been unplugged all winter without any problems. we did have a week or so of single digit temps.

check out this thread for the plug location

Andy, I'm starting to think that maybe that fuel bowl wasn't as much help as I thought. I didn't even think about that when I gave it to you. But like I said, I pulled it off that truck in Marble Falls so there's no way I could have known if the heater was good or not. Man, I'm so sorry. Have you called Harolds yet. I know they have them. I'll do my best to help you track down another one. Damn, your mom was thanking me for helping you when I saw her at my sons school the other day. Man, I feel like such a jackass. I should have thought of that......
