I am looking at ditching the ford shocks after 75K miles and looking at getting the Bilsteins. For a stock suspension F-250 4X4, what are the shock numbers that I am looking for? Fronts and rears? The bilstein site is not much help. They list rears only and most are for 4x2 or lifted trucks.
I got the numbers for my '06 F250 CC 6.0 PSD Auto SB 2X4 from Bilstein in Poway CA by San Diego. Their phone is Bilstein Poway 858 386-5900 Got the shocks at Performance Products, 800 752-6076 BE 5 2815 front and 2816 rear 11/29/06 Remember those are for my truck which is an '06 2X
When I get these shocks, how many hours should I expect. My truck is a 2003 with 75K miles. How much of a bugger will it be to get the old ones off. Anything I should watch out for?
I paid to have mine installed, used a local wheel alignment shop. He charged around $175 if I remember correctly. Mine is an '06 with 39K currently on it.
I've got an application chart, but I don't guess we're allowed to post attachments.
For a 2003 F250 SuperDuty 4X4, the chart shows BE5-2818 for the front and BE5-2819 for the rear. For a "light duty", it shows BE5-2489 for the front and AK2284 for the rear, unless you have "air leveling", then it doesn't show anything.
Shocks shouldn't be that hard to replace. I'm about to do my own, and I'm "physically defective". ;-)
It shouldn't be more than a 45 minute job for even the most mechanically inept. At worst you could spray some WD40 on the nuts of the top and bottom shock mounts the night before you are going to do it so they will come out easily.
I just ordered and installed the 2815's and 2816's.
Installation was pretty easy. Having an air impact wrench makes it even easier. I did the complete job without a lift or even removing the tires. WD-40 to loosen the bolts and some dish soap to lube up the new bushings made the job a bit easier.
I believe these are the right shocks for a '99-04 Super duty 4x4 with no lift.
The rears can be fun, I like to have a big screwdriver handy. It's hard to compress the shock and wiggle the bolt in the bracket, so as the shock expands out I jam the screwdriver in through the bracket/bushing. Once the screwdriver is in there you can move the shock eye up and down with the screw drivers handle while pushing the bolt in.
Hard to describe. The harshness of the ride is greatly diminished. It still rides firm but it not bone jarring anymore. It is not too soft by any means. To me, it is just right. On my F250, I have the X code front springs. It rode very stiff up front. With the bilsteins it is much better.
Try contacting Sonny at www.downsouthmotorsports.com. He installed Bilstein 5100 shocks on my '07 F-250. It has a 6" lift, but Sonny was insistant about using the Bilsteins, because he says they are valved for the F-250. I've been riding around on them for about a month now, and they are great.
