new guy...transmission code "Z"

First time ford owner here. Loved it till it broke. My door sticker says trans code Z. I've found conflicting info and I need a new clutch and slave cylander and dont know what to get. there is 2 sizes a 1 inch bore and a 1 1/32 inch bore. Can anyone tell me what tranny i have or point me in the right direction and maybe somewhere i could get a nice clutch set. what do you think about the advance or autozone ones. im not doing anything crazy with the truck. It s an 88 f250 straight six 5 speed manual 4wd. thanks guys

The tranny is a ZF, not the M5OD. Bore size usually has to do with the master cylinder, so I'm not quite sure what you mean.

Unless you look forward to doing this job again in a year, I would stay far away from AZ or advance.

My advice is to get a Ford slave cylinder and either a centerforce or a Luk clutch.

Andy, it IS a M5OD, but it's the M5OD-HD, made by ZF--the 'M' stands for 'manual', not Mazda, as is a common mistake here. M5OD just means it's a 5-speed manual with the top gear being an overdrive gear. In Ford literature, it will list both the light 5-speed and heavy duty 5-speed as M5OD, but distinguish between them with the HD designation.

Technicalities aside, it's less likely to confuse the two when posting online by referring to them as the M5OD and ZF. Even though it might not technically be what Ford called them, it's just easier to tell them apart.

thanks guys you've been a great resource for help..i was gonna try and stay away from advance clutches but I need one by saturday so Im stuck. About the slave cylander...im guessing I have the one with the 1 1/32 bore cause the one with the 1 inch bore doesnt say anything about having to dissamble the tranny. The 1 1/32 one does..Does anyone know which one I need. Thanks again everyone. If you check partsamerica.com(which is advance's supplier) you'll see what i mean. Truck info is above.

Get a napa premium clutch. Never had a problem with them.

I assume you've figured this out by now, but the slave cylinders are impossible to confuse once you see one of each. The one for your truck is concentric to the input shaft of the transmission, inside the bellhousing. The smaller slave is mounted externally and acts on the pressure plate through a clutch fork and does not have a big hole through the middle.
