I have a 4-barrel Holley carb 4160. Question is, the previous owner deacided to remove the choke and and any parts of it, how essential is it? I have another truck with a single barrel carter and it doesn't have a choke and it seems to run ok or at least start.
i have a 4bbl holley on my truck and i took the choke and all the other stuff...this has been the coldest winter in a long while in NY and just a few extra pumps before you fire it and it has no problem at all running.
I wouldn't run without one, but that doesn't mean the engine won't run. It just means I don't feel like playing with the gas pedal for a couple of minutes till decides it's going to run by itself.

This one caught my eye. I get a litttle laugh out of the choke debate. A carb that is tuned properly will not require a choke. I use a King Demon RS carb that deos not even have a choke horn. I hit the pumps, and do not even pump the throttle (hitting the accelerator pump with the engine off is actually not a good idea in my case). It may sit for months at a time, and fires right up. It may not hit all cylinders immediately, but thet clears up by itself during normal idle in about 6 to 10 seconds. It warms up enough to have great throttle response in that amount of time too. Never has it had a problem with stalling or anything like that.
Once a correctly tuned carb is running, it should never permit a stall.

Well I guess since the invention of the automobile, the car manufacturers never did get any of the carbs tuned right since they all had chokes from the factory?
Given the ancient technology of early metering system, yes!
Also considering that manufacturers tune a carb for general environments, again yes!
They could have done a better job. Why do you think they make jet kits, and metering kits for carbs? If the manufacturesrs could have gotten it right, there would be one carb, and settings for all vehicles. Since we know this to not be true, and every engine requires different metering, they make carbs adjustable, and install chokes for those that are not willing to tune one for different climates.
That does not change the fact that a properly tuned carb does not require a choke. Most people just do not wish to take the time to tune one properly, and get by with the, "well it runs alright" menatallity.
Carbs with no chokes are purchased by individuals that agree, and are willing to spend the time for optimum performance.
If a choke was absolutely necessary, then a carb without one would never start. well we also know this to not be true.
Tune them right, and they will work well without a choke, that is all I am saying.
