I have an 84 f150 4x4 with a 302 & 4 speed. It jumps out of 3rd all the time & occasionally 4th. I know its the sycronizers but dont know how much it will cost to fix it. does anyone know how hard it is to do, or how much it will cost apprx? Any ideas? I'll take any info at all. Also if there is someone near me that wants to do it, or help I'd love to do that. I live in southern Illinois & I like beer . Thanks Todd. I live by Marion/Carbondale area.
I talked to the mechanic the other day & he told me the snchros were bad. Thats all I know, I'm a heating & cooling mechanic. LOL. How about rebuilding it then? How hard is it, & how much? Anyone want to help?

if you know what you're doing, it's easy. if you don't, take it to someone who does. it's not hard, but it definitely isn't something for a first-timer to do alone.
Well the same mechanic said the synchros are like 8 or 900 bucks just to buy. I find that hard to believe. I wouldnt mind taking it somewhere, but I'm broke LOL. It has a new clutch, press plate, thr o bear & slave cyl. I wonder what it would cost to have a shop just rebuild the whole thing. Would it be cheaper to just get a remanufactured one vs rebuild? Thanks for the help. Oh yeah, if I was to get a remaned should I just do a swap to a 5 spd for better mileage? If so, which 5 spd? Remember I'm on a budget. Its funny how I'm on a budget, but have no money LOL.

Rebuilding it yourself is the cheapest way to go. Go to Articles/Specs on the gray bar at the top of this page [ https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/idx/9/0/ ], go to the link for transmissions/axles and page about halfway down. There is a series of 5 articles on how to rebuild a T-18. Ford's service manual is also invaluable. From what I understand the T-19 is virtually the same as the T-18. You can get a rebuild kit on ebay for like $125.
If you're thinking of going to go to a 5 speed you may want to read this thread:
900 for synchros is way out of line for parts only. find some one else.
you are probably going to need some bearings and synchros but no gears. If you do the R&R work you shuld be able to find someone to do the work in about 1 1/2 hours or 2 6 packs.
you need a Friend in the transmission business. find out what bar they go to and go make a Friend, buy some beers.
I've since talked with 2 other tranny guys & they both said there are 3 synchros in it at 200 plus a piece. I'm taking it to a place tomorrow that does this hour long estimate for free. I can't wait to see what that is all about LOL. I like the stalking idea Bruce LOL.
