Wink 5-Speed Transmission Question

Hi Guys,

I am looking for a modern 5-speed manual transmission to put into my 67 4X4, so I thought I would ask you folks with the newer trucks. Those of you who have a 5-speed... do you like it and does it perform well?

Also, who manufactured the newer 5-speeds that ford used in the F-150 trucks... New Process, Borg Warner, etc.??

I do already have a 1994 351W (5.8L) installed in my old truck, so bolt up should not be a problem.

Thank for your input.

Mazda makes the one in the f150 and it is good if you take care of it. but if you are going to be pulling or hauling big lodes check out the ZF 5 speed used in the 3/4 ton and larger trucks it has a much lower 1st and reverse gear and a higher OD and is rated at more ft. ponds of Torque than the Mazda

That's nice to know we have the newer trucks. I guess it's all relative. The ZF is the heavy duty transmission and can be had in a 4X4 as well as a 4X2 version. Do you have a divorced transfer case? If so you would have to use a 4X2 trans or else get a "married" t.c. You know that the ZF has an integral bellhousing so you will need one from behind a 300 six or the 351W. It never came from the factory behind a 302. It also came on diesels and big blocks but those have different bellhousing bolt patterns. Apparently only a 1988 4X2 was the only F-150 that could be had with a ZF. In '96-97 the ZF was strengthened and the torque rating went from 420 ft/lbs (ZFS-542) to 470 ft/lbs (ZFS-547). It also came on diesels and big blocks but those have different bellhousing bolt patterns. The ZF also uses a hydraulic clutch system with a concentric slave cylinder for the small block trans. Here is ZF's transmission application guide:

Go to www.advanceadapters.com & get an nv4500. They'll hook you up. This trans will hook up to the np205 which I think you have.

Hey thanks guys. Now I have an idea of how to proceed. By the way, I no longer have the NP 205 Transfer case. When I installed the 84 NP 435 transmission I also installed the NP 208 Tranfer case that went with it. My truck is old, but the guts are somewhat new.

It will work with the adaptor for it! Then you can use the gear in the t-case. That brings up another thought, I just saw 5 or 6 months ago that they got a speedo that uses gps & you only need a power wire for it. That means you can use any trans you want. I'll bet its expensive though. I just thought about something else, it wont work with the 208 i dont think, but will with the 205.
