Ok, i'm sure this question has been asked before, but i don't really feel like searching through 49 pages of postings to find it, so here it goes. Has anyone changed gears in a stock ford rear and front? I'm not too affraid of the rear end but changing the gears in the front split axle looks like it might be somewhat...fun. Is it even worth it? Can it be done? What gear ratio would be best for mild towing and better low-end get-up and go? I have an 89 with a 351W, C6 auto, 2 1/2 in. lift, 33's, quite a few engine mod's. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I don't blame you for not wanting to do a search. At least you're willing to admit it while others that don't, wont.
The comment from MSUFORMAN was rude and not appreciated. This is a forum after all and if anyone has a question, even if it has been asked 1000’s of times before, they shouldn’t be curtailed from asking it.
Yep gear changes in TTB aren’t tough, just time consuming. With 33” tires I would go with a 3.73 or 4.10. They’ll give you that extra grunt and pep you’re looking for.
If anything the front's gonna be easier than the rear. For the front you can drop the third member and put it on bench. For the rear 8.8 you'll be lying under the truck unless you wanna pull the whole rear end (which is certainly an option).
I definitely wouldn't go 3.73, since you almost surely have 3.55 currently it's too small a jump to be worth the effort.
Thanks for those of you who helped. I greatly appreciate your time. As for the main topic, i currently have a 3.55 ratio. One final question though, do either of you who replied appropriately have a prefered brand? Are there "bad" brands to watch out for? Where could I find the ones for the front TTP? Thanks again for your time and help.
On the Front you will need a carrier change to go to 4.10 from 3.55. Its ok if you want to install a L/S or a locker. If you want the cheap way out just go to your local scrap yard buy a differential and bolt it in. By the way the Diff from a light duty F-250 will bolt right in.
I recently went from 3.55 to 4.10's on my 94. If I had to do it again I would put in 4.56's but I'm running 35" tires.
Okay, since we're on the subject, can someone answer this question for me: If I'm running a Dana 44 (TTB) front end, and it has the carrier (smaller?) used for 3.55 gears, and I want to upgrade to 3.73's, do I need to swap to another (larger?) carrier? I'm getting a different answer from everyone I ask, or anything I read, for that matter..... Half of the replies indicate that 3.73's and numerically smaller (3.55's, etc.) ratios will use the same carrier, while others indicate that the cutoff for needing to switch carriers is at 3.73's and numerically larger (4.10's, etc.) ratios. Specifically, where is the cutoff? Are 3.73's associated with the smaller or larger carrier?

I'd avoid Genuine Gear. All the others aren't too bad, some better than others of course.
Gears for the front TTB are not special - they're just gears for a Dana 44 reverse rotation. Same gears a '78/9 solid axle would use. You can't use gears from Chevy/GM D44's 'cause they're standard rotation.
