? on Boost Pressure

What is the average normal boost pressure throughout the full RPM range for a stock 7.3L PSD?

0-18 psi though out the rpm range. Rarely Some will see 22-24 psi tops. The engine defuels at 24 psi unless there is a chip or a PCM re-write.

boost thoughout the rpm range is impossible to spec out. max boost is. like jim said 15-18. boost is dependant on fuel being injected, fuel injected is dependant on load on the engine, no load (idle, free wheel RPM, decel) no boost, hammer down with 5 ton behind you equals max boost. cruise set on flat highway 2 to 5psi.

Thanks for the info! I was looking at buying a set of guages so that I can see & learn what all these engines are doing as I'm goin' down the road. I saw two guages, one had 0-30 psi and one had 0-60 psi. I didn't want to buy the 60psi if it was only going to read 15-18psi. I'm obviously a first time diesel owner, but I'm learning a lot! Thanks again!

0-35 is a good range gauge. if you end up upgrading much you will wish you had gotten the 35 psi gauge. if you get a hot chip or bigger injectors you will easily go over 30 psi. its not so good for the turbo but atleast you can see it happnen.

wait til you hit 35lbs of boost on a stock turbo. that'll make your butthole pucker up and the aftermath is so rewarding cause you finally have a reason to tell the wife and justify as to why you need an aftermarket turbo. lolBeer!

I have an autometer phantom boost gauge and when going down the highway it reads 0 - 1 psi. On moderate acceleration it hits about 5 and when im stepping on the gas hard it can get up around 15 - 20. I have a chip, exhaust, and intake so I'm kind of thinking my gauge is messed up. I got it used and im not convinced its working correctly. Anyone know why it could be reading so low? I checked all the lines and it looks good.

sounds right to me, the boost pressure is so dependant on many things it's hard to say a "high limit" I see anywhere from 1-5psi at 60mph cruising depending on air temp, wind, road condition, air filter condition, heck even fuel WVO always seems to give me more cruise boost pressure.

high end is the same, over winter when it was -20º I could hit 25 psi, now that it is 50º and my filter is getting dirty 22psi is tough to do.

Maybe my gauge isnt so broken after all. Chip is a DP tuner and i usually have it set to 80hp econo. I'll put it in the 120hp setting and give see what i can get tomorrow.

yeah those pressure all sound about right. Dieselrod is right about the pressure being very difficult to measure other than max boost just because of so many variables

I have the same problem. I have autometer cobalt guages. Highways speeds 0-1. If I get on it really hard I have gotten as high as 10psi, buts that it. I can hear the turbo howling under the hood so I always have suspected the guage. It seems to react too slow. I once hooked an air compressor set at 15 psi to the boost tube and it took about 10 seconds to register the full 15psi. Mine is plummed into the map line close to the manifold. Any ideas. The other two guages work great but I have never been happy with the boost.

I would bet that the nylon tubing going to your gauge is pinched or kinked

I am almost positive that my nylon line is not kicked or pinched. I check it over and it has a very nice easy path and big radius turns. I might move my boost gauge "T" closer to the manifold and see if that helps. Would a larger diameter boost gauge line work? I am using the nylon line that you get at the parts store for oil pressure gauges. I guess the best test would be to plumb the boost gauge right to the air compressor and see what it does then.
