Anyone know how the ABS sensor works?

So heres my problem. My 99 Ranger speedo is not functioning. I'm pretty sure it's something to do with the major changes the truck has undergone =). I put a 9" floater (amongst many other things) rearend in the back and now have no speedo. I figure it has to be the ABS sensor that I no longer have that was on the 8.8 rearend I replaced. Not totally sure what options I have to fix this, I guess my question is... Is there anyway to bypass this sensor and get my speedo rock'n again? If the pic works, kinda shows my progress...

The anti-lock brake sensors operate on magnetic induction principle. As the teeth on the anti-lock brake sensor indicator rotate past the stationary sensor pole piece, an AC voltage is induced in the sensor circuit with a frequency proportional to the average rear wheel speed.

P.S. Interesting project!

By doing away with the rear ABS speed sensor, you've not only disabled the speed-o, but the rear ABS also.

So now you no longer have ABS on the rear wheels & you'll likely end up with the ABS computer being unhappy & it turning on the dash ABS trouble light.

Thanks

So, you wouldn't happen to have any McGyver type ideas on how one could bypass that sensor would ya? Or if I have to have the sensor in there in order for it to work, what does it hook up to? Does it read off the ring gear or something? I'm so helpless, I know

BIG thanks in advance

Well, if you want all of it to work, without a lot of effort, (speed-o & RABS), then put the Rangers rear end back in it.

Looks like a senior Mechanical Engineering project.

Well to have it all work it'll take more imagineering than I can muster.

Maybe a SAE Master Engineer will happen by, take pity & offer up some helpful tips!!!!

Kinda sounds like you jumped into this without thinking it all the way through first!!!!????

Good luck with the project, let us know how you deal with this glitch & how it turns out.

Do you still have the old diff? Maybe you can pull the sensor off it, see how it's mounted etc. and then maybe get some ideas from that.

Well, there were a few models of the 9inch that had the VSS I think (lincolns..) or you could upgrade to a sterling 10.25 with a VSS( i can see that's not happening with that setup you have there though, and it'd probably be overkill anyway). There is also the option of building a tone ring and placing around the driveshaft toward the tcase. I haven't done any of these things so I don't have any direct experience, I've just seen a few cases here and there on this site. I think you will have much better luck down in the offroad and 4x4 forum with this question.

I definately appreciate the advice. Unfortunately I didn't realize the sensor would affect my speedo and got rid of the 8.8" stock rearend. I had a 93 ranger that was VERY similar as far as suspension setup and I didn't have any problems with speedo at all. Same 8.8 to a 9" without plugging in the same sensor (at least I thought it was the same, ). Don't really care too much about the ABS (ABS is horrible in the dirt) as I do the speedo. I'll try and find one at a junkyard this weekend and see how it works, maybe I can fab something up or adapt it to the 9". Keep ya'll posted!

Bigger pic...

Well if you have 4 wheel ABS, it's computer shares the rear speed sensors output with the speed-o, so keep that in mind in what ever you do!!!!

To diasble the ABS when your off roading & don't want it, I suppose you could just pull the ABS systems fuse & it would revert to normal (without ABS) braking .

thats a nice looking truck. the '93 probably had the speedo gear in the rear of the tranny or tcase (they moved them to the diff housing for ABS reasons I think). Maybe its possible to swap to one of the cases that has that?

do you race that thing or is it just a toy? I like the bling wheels

The old Rangers ('94 and prior) have mechanical speedometers, driven by a gear in the tranny or transfer case.

Your transfer case could have the spot already on it for the speedometer gear, worth a shot either way. You would probably have to either find a sensor that could send an electric signal for the speedo from the mechanical hookup in the transfer case and have it calibrated, or buy an aftermarket speedo and rig something up off the driveshaft.
