Running too Rich?

I've got a 292 V8 in my 1964 F250. Since purchasing the truck, ive been tuning it and adjusting all to make it run and perform better. Even after a tune up and adjusting the carburator, I'm still having a problem with it it running too rich. My plugs get all carboned up as well as excessive carbon out the exhaust. In addition to the carbon, I have frequent backfiring out the exhaust on decelleration when I gear down. The truck has a 500cfm 2bbl btw. Any suggestions?

Yeah, the 500 cfm two barrel is too much. Those that I've seen are for racing.

I've got a 350 I can swap onto it. Any guess on how much it would cut my performance?

Don't suppose you would know your jet numbers.
(example a number 69 jet.) Should be somewhere around there.

Carb

Here is a link to information available here on FTE: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...eral-info.html

It is a good reference. The stock 2V carb for '64 was the 245 cfm 1.02 venturi 2100. My new motor has a mild upgrade in cam, large diameter intake valves, intake manifold, bore .060, and compression. With that the largest 2100 that would work well is the 1.14 venturi 300 cfm, according to research and a 2100 carb expert. Assuming your 350 cfm model is a Holley, they ARE more tuneable than the 2100s, and you will likely be making some changes on it for matching to the Y. In case it helps, the stock 2100 jet for your Y was 48.

The 1964 292 has the smallest intake valves available, so you dont need much carburetor to get the job done.

I just wanted to jump in here and say; thanks for the reference on carb's. I got a 64 model 292; and plan on rebuilding the engine to as close to stock level as possible, and was wondering what size carb to install. I purchase the truck (59 F100); minus a carb acouple years ago and know plan on finally rebuilding the truck into a good dependable driver. Mostly local around the town and county driving that I live in. I'm interestied in the Holley 350 cfm carb. I guess I need to post my intake numbers; if one of you tech guys could figure it out by just looking in my gallery I would be very greatful. I couldn't tell you if its a 2 barrel or 4 barrel intake??
Thanks :

Mitch

That is a 4V manifold, looks like a late model. A small Holley 4V would do well, 390 cfm. Improved performance over the Holley 2V 350 include: throttle response, mileage, power, low end acceleration. If the 390 is new, it could be a "bolt on and go", assuming motor is good.

Thanks 46yblock; As I stated I couldn't tell if it was 2 or 4 barrel. The PO I never met prior to or after the sell of the truck. He was a long distance truck driver; I purchase it only with his wife on the sell.
Hopefully will get this truck up and running soon.

Thanks again;

Mitch

The other day I was in a truck salvage yard looking for a power steering setup for my '62, and I was eyeing a HD292 in a C600ish tractor with no rear end. Unfortunately it didn't have PS, but I was toying with the idea of giving him $100-200 for the engine anyway, selling the rams horns on ebay, and keeping the 4bbl setup and maybe coming out ahead on the deal. I've been wondering if the 4bbl upgrade would be a noticable improvement. Does anybody know what the stock holley 4 bbl size was for a hd292? Was it a 390 cfm?
I found every C-series power steering application there EXCEPT a y-block.
PS with a 262, PS with a 332. PS with a FT. Even found a '61 C1000 super duty. My god those engines are huge - never seen one in person before.
Sorry getting OT.
