I had just recently seen a demo on TV where they had used tootpaste to polish the headlight lenses. The results were pretty impressive. A soft cloth, elbow grease, and toothpaste made the lenses look brand new.
I've used a plastic polish in the past, and it's worked great. It's big for cleaning the Jeep soft windows. My light output was drastically reduced compared to my Bronco, so I opted for some new clear headlight assemblies instead of working on my original ones.
When I was redoing my first trucks headlights and tailights I just wet sanded and then clear coated with rattle can. As long as take care to prevent runs it looks totally brand new.
As I type this I think to myself that I'd start out with the plastic polish and try the rattle can last. An Expidition is a nice vehicle, not a college kids junker so start with the right stuff first.
