finally back together

well i finally got everything back together after the head gasket repair. all i have left to do is put the injectors in and start it up, but wanted to have them tested before putting them back in the motor. so i decided to just make me a homemade tester out of a grease gun and test them myself. tested them and out of eight only one tested at 1600lbs, and all the rest tested at a range of 1000lbs to 1300lbs. well i guess its time to buy new injectors, guess i cant complain those injectors had 267,000 miles on them. im anxious to see how its going to run with new injectors and a topend repair. has anyone ever rebuilt there own injectors, ive heard its easy and all you have to do is change the tips and add shims under the spring to get the pressure back up to specs. is this true and if it is where do you even begin to buy parts for them?

I scavanged shims from an old set, with part # of tip assy, I was able to buy new from diesel care and performance. Only worth while if you have a very clean place to do the work, and like to tinker. A complete rebuilt set is only 129 bucks from them and core charge of like 25 bucks. With the Border and shipping I figured I'd give rebuilding my own a try. Worked out well all tested a 1975-2000 psi, a good spare set I'd say.

Glad to see you got it back together j tate, I think you'll find its worth keeping in the long run.

I have seen examples of pop testers made out of bottle jacks, but I did not realize that a grease gun will do. I hope to rebuild my old set of injectors some day, its not like theres much to them-also hope to pop the pressure up a bit. According to some 2200psi is not out of line.

thanks kjlypw for the info on the injector tips from diesel care. i was going to order new injectors from them and someone told me they were no good as for as the remans. they said the new ones were great, and as for as robbing shims out of other injectors this is the only set of injectors i have. this trucks never had the injectors changed except for one and the previous owner did that one. when i removed them out of the engine i knew they would have to be replaced with 267,000 miles on them. i would like to rebuild them just to have an extra set on hand. well ill keep everybody informed when i finally get my new injectors in. the only prob is i cant order them until next week and no telling when theyll come in. thanks for all the replies.
