i am going to be replacing the sector saft seal the is by that pitmen arm. has anyone done this before? is this a matter of taking the pitmen arm off and then removing the nut and pulling out the old seal and replacing. the kit i got is part # 8531 from advance it comes with snap ring, spacer, dust seal, pessure seal, and spacer. can all of this be done with the gear box left on the truck?
thank you in advance
I have found that when the seal goes there is a real good chance the bearing is gone. Ford steering boxes leave a lot to be desired. Do you still have adjustment in the box? I have rebuilt steering boxes in the past. I find it easier and less expensive in most cases to just replace them.
i have never tired to adjust it any. from what i have been looking at, its a matter of loosen the bolt on toop and turning the screw. i know i have a little play in the streeing wheel but i was told i might beable to get most of it out by adjusting the screw. i know for a new gear box its about 160.00, the gear box complete rebuild kits is 60.00 and the pitmen seal replacement was 16.00.
It's a Pitman arm puller. If the truck is an F150 and light puller will work. But if it is an F250-350 you will need a heavy puller. On my F250 the gear box had to come off the truck to get the puller on the shaft/arm.
P.S. in most cases if the seals are bad the box is and needs replaced. Adjusting an old box is only a temp fix at best. In a few miles the slop will come back worse than before and you will/may feel a sticky/ing spot as you turn the wheel.
