Hello eveyone, new to the form and it looks like there is a lot of great info. I am hoping you guys can help me with a problem.
My dad bought a 51 F-1 last year. It has a Flathead V8 that was freshly rebuild. I think the previous owner said he put around 5000 miles on the fresh motor. We put about a thousand miles on it last summer and it ran great. Than last fall it lost oil pressure. Throughout the winter we check the obvious things but couldn't figure it out. Today my dad called and he droped the pan and took apart part of the oil pump. Apparently there is an idler gear between the pump and the cam which he can spin with his fingers. This obvious means that the gear isn't engaging the gear on the cam or that the gear on the cam is no longer coupled to the camshaft. Has anyone experinced this? Any ideas on how or what could cause this and if there is anything that can be done short of pulling the engine and rebuilding the lower end of the motor. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Hmmm... Sorry to see you come here with a problem like this. If he's sure the idler is on its axle, I think you're pretty much destined to pull the cam... which means pulling the heads and all the valves. I've heard of this happening, can't remember if it's the idler teeth or the cam teeth that fail, but I would guess it's the cam's. I've never done this myself but there is a chance the idler is just out of position. Do you have a manual? Read up on how the idler is retained, and how the axle is removed. All I can remember about it is that it isn't real obvious. Good luck!
